Tripple post but:
What I love so much about Mark is he's obviously a weirdo and really smart but he's not a whiny geek about it. "I've always been an outsider, yeah, but I dont lose any sleep over it". -Mark E. Smith |

I just listened to Dragnet...there are definitely elements I liked about it but I don't think I'll listen to it again.

You should listen to it again. Nobody gets a Fall album on first listen.

It's pretty hilarious and right on in some places but I disagree with some of it.
Here's what I think: This Nation's Saving Grace- This album is Marky purposefully going mainstream with the influence of his American wife and band memeber.(Brix) It's more traditionally Rock than anything else by The Fall which makes it really distinct and interesting but it also suffers from some weak songs and can be a little cheezy at times. Also, I don't think it's actually that much easier to get into than other better Fall albums. I wouldn't want it to be someone's first experience with the band. But: SPOILT VICTORIAN CHILD, holy shit what a great track And Paintwork is really artsy and pretty. Hex Education Hour- The most Punk album next to Live at the Witch Trials. Very noisy and disorientating with barely any pop anywhere to be seen. "The Classical" is a song that smugly says "We are The Fall, prepare to get your ass kicked." Jaw-bone is a Punk song in almost the most traditional sense. I can see why people like it so much, but I feel like everything that's done in this album is done better in a different Fall album. Room to Live- The description is right on. It's really chaotic but otherwise inessential Grotesque- Mark's magnum opus. Amphetamine fueled jittery madness with enough hooks to keep you dancing. Not a single bad song. There's something for everyone. And the LYRICS, holy fuck THOSE LYRICS. I would need to write a book to describe all the genius of the lyrics. It's way easier to get into than the chart suggests imo LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM Witch Trials- Description is right on. It's a punk album but with a little more grove. And it's fucking amazing. I think a good argument can be made for this actually being the best Fall album. though it's pretty difficult to get into all the tracks. If some of the Bsides were switched in, it would be the best Fall album. The Bsides are all amazing and worth checking if you like the album. "Industrial Estate" is the perfect Punk song imo, both lyrically and musically. PbL- A more laid back atmospheric groove. It's the perfect Fall album to listen to with headphones while you go for a walk or work on something and just let it seep into your subconscious. That isn't to say it lacks hooks interesting songs or hooks. "Eat Yourself Fitter" and "Kicker Conspiracy" are some of the most engaging and catchy songs Mark has ever penned. The lyrics are again absolutely fantastic and interesting. "Wings" is a Science Fiction horror story concerning time traveling wings. Slates- The chart is write. You can twerk to this album. It also just fucking rocks Wonderful and Frightening- This album is all over the place. Sometimes it is as the chart suggests one of the more pop Fall albums. Mark's vocal hooks and strong melodies sink their claws into you and won't let up until you've hummed "C.R.E.E.P" and "Oh! Brother" to yourself at least a thousand times. Brix's vocals adds a layer of softness to the tracks. But if you go in expecting something as pop as Saving Grace, tracks like "Copped It" are going to freak you the fuck out. Also CREEP is pure poetry lyric wise. Some of his coolest lines Dragnet- Though the production is extremely raw I think this album still maintains a crazy amount of frantic groove. "Psychic Dance Hall" should have anyone with a pulse jumping around right from the start. The basslines are killer from beginning to end and the pounding tribal beats never let up. The whole thing makes you want to strip down and dance around a fire. Bend Sinister- It's not really that Dark. I don't know what the chart is talking about there. "Mr. Pharmacist" is the best cover they ever recorded. Otherwise the album is just okay, nothing spectacular. The Frenz experiment- As the chart suggests, very pop. "In These Times" is one of the coolest songs they've ever recorded. Mark shouting "My friends don't add up to one hand! My Friends!" on the opening track is awesome. "The Steak Place" is a pretty little groove about an actual Steak House. The way he uses language to add flavor to even the most mundane things is amazing. Extricate - Written after his divorce from Brix it's a sort of trip through his new single life. It's the closet thing you'll get to "sad songs" from Mark but they're still pretty upbeat and funny. It's the type of album that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. "Telephone thing" is a also a groovy motherfucker. I wouldn't recommend trying to get into it unless you really like The Fall though |

Listened to TNSG, now listening to Hex Enduction Hour. This record sounds a bit more like what I expected to hear from The Fall, which TNSG didn't really meet. I get the impression that TNSG shows a few different sides of the band, which is why it was recommended by the chart first.
I'm really enjoying songs like Winter that are really repetitive which I can get lost in. Also Hex Enduction Hour is a really cool name. |

Yeah TNSG is so different from anything else that I think it's a weird album to start with because it's not at all representative of the rest of their material

It's also their most popular album, so there's another reason to put it at the start

I think "always different but always the same" is actually an apt way to describe The Fall
