…hmm…it sounds like a generic pop/rock song at first listen. Maybe I need to give this a few more listens when I get back from work before forming a solid opinion on it, but so far I'm not feeling it.

Is this supposed to be a song that Howard said was "hit single" material?

Production reminds me of Zwan. Songwriting reminds me of Oceania.
Tommy sounds good under there somewhere. |

i mean it's very zwan-y, but I guess that's just because it's how bill writes and produces these days
there's no lushness; the elements are bright but cold |

This generic sentimental pop crap is the equivalent of the generic hard rock/metal crap of the Zeitgeist era.
I mean honestly - this is like some sad Dad rock shit. Also, Tommy Lee might as well be Mike Byrne. Nothing about these drums is remotely interesting. |

It's the musical equivalent of the colour beige.
That's my stinging review. |

Dear god the vocals. It's worse than before.
Guitars and chorus are really nice. Thank god Billy hired a competent drummer. All of the Pumpkins' balls and trademark sound left in 1999, 2000, and 2009. It's a good song but it's not a Pumpkins song. |

What a disappointment; horrible, passionless, mixed-too-high vocals, with no riff or hook to speak of. What happened to that kind of catchy riff that this supposedly derives from? This could be a new Gin Blossoms or Dishwalla track. All that shit that Billy posted about "guitars, guitars, and more guitars" and lean, mean approach was apparently bullshit once again. Ugh. He really has lost the plot if he thinks this is good in any way.

I mean, he sounds more competent than mike but yeah it's boring. It doesn't really sound iike he's playing a nice groove to complement the guitar and bass, just kinda hitting stuff.

Totally agree. What is Billy thinking? Why the vocal harmonies? Why are they so high in the mix? Why the neutered, hookless guitars? This might be the worst ever SP single.

This is definitely about the same quality as most of the Teargarden stuff.
Ie almost unlistenable. The demo of Arms of Sheep is 1 jillion times better than this. Mostly the vox. |

It reminds me of Oceania, which sounded like a zwan/TBK hybrid. So this song doesn't offer anything new, and it continues the same syrupy and sentimental style of lyrics that Oceania had (which I didn't care for). From the entries he was posting, I expected something quite different.

The vocals are too loud again. And embarrassing vocal harmonies again.
Tommy Lee sounds good - much improved over Mike Byrne. Otherwise this is pretty terrible. Quote:
It's insanity that a mix engineer would put a vocal that sounds that bad, that high in the mix. It's inconceivable to me. It's got to be BC behind the scenes demanding that the vocal is louder. I remember back in the 90s rolling down my car windows and driving around blasting each new SP album. Now I'm listening on headphones hoping nobody hears me listening to this. It's kind of sad. Ha, I just noticed that somebody else had cut and pasted several comments from this thread into the RS article. Totally weird. Last edited by pavementtune : 10-20-2014 at 11:39 AM. |

I imagine what the old Billy would have done with a line like "the world's on fire".
Maybe the world's on fire because the world is a Vampire and it's daylight. |
