Default Billy and beards

"There’s a level of criticism to levy at this subcultural world that occasionally claims me. This simple thing gets put out there: We’re the authority, and if you wear this T-shirt or grow this beard, we’ll accept you. It’s very similar to the schoolyard. If you don’t beat up Johnny, they won’t let you hang out." -Billy Corgan

"I once had a very contentious interview with some bearded jerko, ya know?" -Billy Corgan

"When the article makes fun of the idea I’d say that’s not reportage and certainly a wasted college education for that bearded soy man.” -Billy Corgan

"In America we have totally gross commercialism, people literally getting into porn for music videos. Porn. People rubbing their butts up against one-another. It's porn. And on the other side moustaches, beards, t-shirts, ukuleles. You can see why I go to the middle." -Billy Corgan

" In amongst all the bitterness and the acrimony of the bearded-blogger army, there are a lot of people getting pats on the head for making really substandard music and/or veiled pop." -Billy Corgan

"I called [veteran producer] Rick Rubin and asked him to recommend someone to work with. I thought maybe I needed a young, bearded producer, some cool kid who might get what I’m trying to do." -Billy Corgan

"And we’ve seen this thing happen over the last 25 years — afforded by the Internet — where that narcissistic streak has become a business model. And for every Pitchfork, there are 400 bearded bloggers that are writing the same shit, if not worse." -Billy Corgan

"The culture that needs to place me behind P.J. Harvey on guitar. And I love P.J. Harvey, and I have complete admiration for her, but, c’mon, me behind P.J. Harvey on guitar? I mean, c’mon, that’s a fucking asshole, in a beard, in New York, who has to put me there to make some sort of statement." -Billy Corgan

"I’m sure the troll who lives under the beard bridge will have a field day with that for his website (Alternative Nation). You know, the one he jerks off to…"Corgan blasts Manson with insensitive tour joke."” -Billy Corgan

" I’m not under anybody’s thumb anymore, no-one can attempt to control me- not that they ever did, but you were fighting against things; you were fighting against MTV, you were fighting against the record label. Who are the great foes now, Pitchfork? You know?A bunch of sarcy indie guys with beards writing about guys with beards in basements." -Billy Corgan

"I'm sorry, every system up until the last 10, 12 years... it kicked its own door in. They didn't need it lubricated first. The Clash kicked the f****** door in. Nirvana kicked their own door in. The Cure kicked their own door in. Whatever, pick your f****** movement. Kick in your own f****** door. You don't need a guy with a beard to put you over. Do it yourself." -Billy Corgan

"So I really want to take a proactive stance with the Warner Bros./Reprise people. They’ve been cool. I wouldn’t want to paint a negative picture. But … I think they’re scratching their beards over there. What do you do with a 38-year-old alternative rock icon that made an album that doesn’t sound like what he’s known for, goes on tour, doesn’t play his old songs or keep his mouth shut and looks kind of crazy?" -Billy Corgan

"No. Without sounding overly prophetic, I just don't think the way we think of rock and roll is going to be around in ten years. I think pop is just going to obliterate everything. And I'm sorry, and a thousand men can throw their beards in the air, but most of what passes for "Alternative" music these days is pop." -Billy Corgan

" (on John Lennon) Watching his changes, even in hindsight, is remarkable. He went through something of a public disintegration, starting in 1965 with Help! and then going up till the end of the '60s when he was this bearded guy singing Yer Blues, talking about how lonely he was and that he wanted to die - which he later admitted was because he was on heroin." -Billy Corgan

"You can say in a crowded room that 'Oh, I love Radiohead,' and everyone goes, 'Oh yeah, me too.' But if you say 'I love Iron Maiden,' people go 'What?'" he insisted. "Why are those fans ignored? It's the same high school game ... it's still the same s---. It's still some guy in a corner with a beard telling me I'm not cool enough, yet I pioneered the very form of music that he's still talking about 20 f---ing years later." -Billy Corgan

A new study found that men with beards are more attractive. More great work from the university of Bob Seger.

Has the absurdity of these actual BC quotes gone unnoticed also? The one where he's indignant because some publication dared to suggest that a girl could be a better guitarist than him?

Sounds about right. He acted like D’Arcy was literally incapable of playing bass and I’ve heard more than enough SP live shows to know that’s far from true. She called him sexist recently enough and it sure seems he is.

It sounds more like the same thing he was on about when he said he'd "piss on Radiohead." If I remember correctly, he wasn't actually even really criticizing Radiohead (he's said in the past that he quite likes them). He was talking about music publications rating Johnny Greenwood a better guitarist than Ritchie Blackmore, which he finds absurd. I think what he was trying to say is that he thinks there are sacred cows in the music industry, and this leads to music journalists elevating them in ways that have to do more with what's fashionable than more objective metrics. Whether Radiohead's music is better than Blackmore's Nights or Deep Purple's is obviously subjective (I definitely prefer Radiohead to either of those bands, even though I do enjoy Deep Purple), but when it comes to technical proficiency at the guitar, I think Corgan is just saying that he believes Blackmore to have more of it, and feels the only reason one would say otherwise is because of the current cultural importance of Radiohead putting them above scrutiny. Corgan feels he's the only one "fearless" enough to call that out and "piss" on rock music's current golden boys. This is how I understood his intent, anyway. I have no idea if there even exists such a music publication that rated Greenwood as a more proficient guitarist than Blackmore. Corgan often refers to vague sentiments that cannot be found by anyone else.

So, when it comes to the quote about Harvey, I don't think Corgan is saying she's a bad artist or that a woman couldn't possibly be good at guitar. I think he's just saying, "I think I'm a more technically skilled guitarist than Harvey, and the only reason one would say otherwise is because Harvey has more cultural currency amongst hipsters than I do," as Pumpkins have always been a bit too mainstream and "uncool" for a lot of indie journalists.

I'm not some Corgan apologist, I think he's a narcissistic ass. But like, I don't think this quote here is evidence of sexism. I'm not saying he isn't sexist. He's already shown himself to be a right-wing conspiracy-theorist transphobe, so it'd be a very peculiar state of affairs if he weren't sexist. But I'm not necessarily seeing it in this specific quote. I think he's just insecure and cares too much what some rando at Pitchfork thinks, despite constantly claiming not to care about them. When he closes his eyes at night, he sees bearded hipsters mocking him. And then he cannot get to sleep.

Yeah pretty much this. It's just that it doesn't sound very good for him to say this kind of stuff either way. It's evidence that he just worries about dumb shit that doesn't matter. Everyone knows Billy is one of if not the best guitarist of the 90's so it's just insecurity.

What? I would argue Billy was the best overall musician of the 90s, but he’s absolutely not better at guitar than a lot of the 90s metal guitarists. You taking Billy over Dimebag Darrell or Marty Friedman? Dave Mustaine? Chuck Schuldiner?

Everyone knew that then besides myself. I never considered Billy to be one let alone the best musician of the 90s. What artists do you inc.lude in this evaluation, USA only, rock pop only or...?

I'm mainly speaking in terms of alternative rock. As a lead guitarist in the genre I think he was pretty peerless at the time. Not to mention SD really pushed the boundaries of guitar rock and production. Comparing someone like Chuck Schuldiner to Billy makes no sense as death metal is an entirely different genre. I don't really rate those Megadeth dudes tbh. And yeah Dimebag was great no doubt, Billy would agree.

and Matt Pike? I just hear reheated Sabbath riffs. He did nothing that he didn't take out of the Iommi playbook. But really this about beards.

"On Monday night's edition of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Corgan went it alone for an acoustic performance from quarantine at home. Sporting a lockdown beard, Corgan performed “Hard Times,” an apt, country-flavored song lifted from his 2019 album Cotillions (as William Patrick Corgan)."

Bill would definitely be in my top 5 or so alt-rock guitarists from his generation, alongside Jonny Greenwood, Tom Morello, Graham Coxon, & either Nick McCabe or Bernard Butler

i said this in i think the best mcis epic thread but ranking music and/or musicians quantitatively is a stupid, fruitless, arbitrary exercise

Code:
int 90Guitarists=75; //number of eligible 90s alt rock guitarists, selected completely arbitrarily
int CorganRank=12; //i think corgan is the 12th best 90s alt rock guitarist because delusion
int PosLists;

for (int i=1, i≤CorganRank, i++) {
     PosLists += (90Guitarists-i);     //some shit like that
}
there are PosLists number of argument to be made. go nuts
