Default Pumpkins songs that rip off other artists

Admittedly I'm late to the party, but I've seen a lot of posts reflecting on the similarities between "1979" and The Frogs' "Pleasure".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYRto3kmtQo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8BcubKDbE0

While that might (possibly) be up for debate, an obvious song that Billy ripped off lyrically is "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad with "Cash Car Star". Billy literally ripped the song off word for word.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz9KVcLCUek

What are some other Pumpkins songs where Billy obviously ripped off another song/artist?

That's not ripping off, it's a reference. Artists do it all the time.

Off the top of my head, there's Pink Floyd's Let There Be More Light - "For there revealed in glowing robes was Lucy in the sky"

In Corgan's celebration of Rush, he mentions ripping off parts of this song for Cherub Rock.

Also, the grunting at the end of Hairspray Queen. Billy is cribbin' the other scribe.

The Television song Marquee Moon has the same chords as Cherub Rock.

I actually don't think Billy ripped it off intentionally, because it's actually just an ascending major scale. Sounds cool tho.

Billy said he wrote "Daydream", trying to write a song like My Bloody Valentine.

I think it's that song he used as a reference point. They are both very different though...

If Billy had simply used the song title like Pink Floyd did with their Beatle reference then you might have an argument here, but instead Billy takes, line by line mind you, lyrics directly from GFR's "We're An American Band".

Quite frankly, Don Brewer would have a strong case in court against Billy if the song were to ever be commercially released.

dude, it's a parody, cash car star is sung from the perspective of the Glass character or whatever, the reference and its reasons for being there are obvious. GFR are exactly the type of broad, obnoxious rock band that the song and the MACHINA concept (barf) are all about

I'm not buying the parody theory. It's word for word. It's a ripoff.

What, the words "Lucy in the sky" don't appear in the lyrics of "Lucy in the sky with diamonds"?

Did you not realise that that's the only example of this occurring either? Did you read any of those links in that Google search?

Queen ? He said there was some Queen on that album, and it's a bit Brian May-esque...I wouldn't know which song though, if it's Queen at all.

Songs that quote other songs are very common.

And no it's not parody either

might as well say he was paying homage to them when he sang "HELLO, goodbye, YOU KNOW you made us cry" in Shame

not every matching word is a reference or rip off, lol

melody is similar in both examples, positive the references passed thru bills head when he wrote both today and shame

Bill was a big fan of Bad Brains and this song has a riff that is similar (though more complex than "Quiet") and a similar drum intro:

No, you're not positive, you've just imagined a scenario and then assumed it must be true.
