part of alternative (back in the beginning when it meant something) was the model through which the music was made... the Beatles were about as mainstream as you can get in terms of their use of labels, promotion, etc. In the later years I guess this changed... The most alternative thing about their music model was to quit touring. Still though, alternative was also a rejection of the indulgence and excess in mainstream music in the 70s and 80s, which again is after the Beatles... it was very much a movement in a particular period of time, and not a sound or genre.

it's just not really correct to say they had anything to do with alternative music. no different than arguing that Link Wray was a punk musician

killers should be on the high alternative list

although i guess Sam's Town is their only album that is high alternative
the first one is low, the second album is high, the third is maybe mid...yeah i guess you rated them right

The Killers have some good songs but their sound is The Strokes + Interpol + Springsteen and they are basically a major label radio bitch act. LOW ALTERNATIVE.

killers are mid-high alternative overall (as i stated in the sam's town thread) though that does not necessarily reflect the quality of their songwriting. hot fuss >>> everything after. the killers have a fairly distinctive sound because of brandon flower's voice (one of the best male rock vocalists of the last 10 years imo) and the driving, emotive quality of their tunes distinguishes them from other synth/guitar-driven bands of recent years, who are usually more angular and post-punk. but i feel that the killers' sound is just slightly too unrefined and loose to be considered high alternative. that's not necessarily a bad thing though. they're a good, honest band- in my opinion they occasionally they try too hard, but they're not pretentious. remember, high-alt just means having such a meticulously crafted aesthetic that the music feels suspended from reality. if you listen to the pumpkins' mellon collie, it doesn't sound like a garage band from chicago, it sounds like a found recording, like "a psychedelic metal band from the 1920s" as corgan said. if you listen to Muse, they've taken the concept of "space-rock" so literally that they sound like they're actually from another galaxy. if you listen to radiohead's more ambitious material (OKC etc), their music is so sonically varied and incomparable that it seems to exist in its own musical and cerebral dimension. high alternative is about completely immersing the listener or viewer in hyper-reality, whether its something high-concept and grandiose (sp, radiohead, muse) or something twee or cartoonish (deerhoof, white stripes.)

uh, his voice literally sounds like he stole half of it from the guy from Interpol and the other half from the guy in the Strokes. Not distinctive at all...
