Default for those who were around, was the breakup announcement in May 2000 shocking?

or did you see it coming

It was kind of a shock to hear it, sure, but I wasn't entirely surprised when I found out. Adore didn't do as well as they wanted and Machina did worse. Writing was kind of on the wall.

Not at all.

In fact, I've got a confession to make; it was me who advised Billy to break up the band. I've been giving him career advice for the past 17 years.

Sorry guys!

I didn't see it coming but it wasn't a shock. I saw them on the Machina tour and it sounded sloppy and uninspired, and the album itself seemed to be treading water. It was kind of a relief to put them out of their misery.

As a fan for just 5 years I would have been mostly shocked that D'ARCY only 5 months after the reunion-tour of the band left the PUMPKINS in September 1999.

Then the band was already on its downfall with the rising tension also between CORGAN and IHA.
With the more declining popularity of the band reflected by the record sales of MACHINA it was only a question of time.

In hindsight, I feel like it was kind of a relief.

I was sad, but graduated high school in May following the final show, so it was fitting for me that the soundtrack of my teenage years wrapped up right on que.

Thanks for catering to my timeline, Billy.

That's actually very interesting because I had a similar experience, although I must be two years older than you (I remember Adore coming out the week I gradated from hs).

On my first year of college, I discovered and fell in love with a different band, that slowly eclipsed my obsession of SP that I had had since 1994. So I guess when SP broke up, I was like "OK, cool, I can shift my obsession to this other band". So the same thing happened as you, but I had about a two year overlap between SP and the other band during my first two years of college. A transition period I guess.

In all seriousness, I remember the break-up well. Truth be told, I couldn't have cared less at that point. I felt like they were floundering and at that point I didn't even think Corgan or the band were cool anymore. I felt like they were trying too hard to fit in and be popular and at the time thought they were "sell-outs" (ahh to be 15). The loss of D'arcy really bothered me at the time too as I didn't think MADM really fit the image.

In hindsight the albums weren't that bad, but the aesthetic choices and image decisions were just terrible. I thought Corgan was an alt-rock cool hero When I was a little kid and even had my mom buy me the Spin and Rolling Stone issues with SP on the cover but by the Machina era it was like super skinny bald guy in tight leather dresses and make-up. All I could think was "This sucks".

I also remember seeing that Machina era version of BWBW on some TV programme and was initially all excited to hear it and then thought: "what the fuckkkkkkkk is this shit".

So to say the least, the band wasn't really resonating with me in what they were doing.

I had a feeling about it. At the Houston show in April of that year several fans that had been waiting in line got to eat lunch with BC and he spilled the beans to that small group.

I graduated in June of that year, and decided to take a year off from school and just get a job for a little while. SP wasn't anywhere near my favorite band around that time, so while I remember thinking it was kind of a shame, I didn't care much.

I started thinking along the lines of what you said though the following year, when Rotten Apples/Judas O came out (and somehow it wasn't until that happened that I discovered that Machina II - and fucking TAFH of all things - existed).

I remember just walking up the street to a friend's place in the middle of this raging snowstorm with Blissed and Gone playing on my discman (lol) as being the moment where I realized how much I actually would miss them. I'd started college and was just thinking "Fuck, high school's done, the Pumpkins are done...feels like a whole chapter of my life is closed and the whole world's changing.
