Default BWBW b-side reaction

what was peoples reaction to the BWBW b-side ...said sadly?

i really wonder how james got that one past billy.
it's just one of those songs I just don't get

was the single just a 'meh whatever' effort because they wanted people to focus on the album?

billy probably didn't like it, but if he didn't let James play any of his songs he would have probably got sad/mad and left the band. i personally think it's pretty good.

it showed that they had more to offer than just angst driven stadium rock tracks, a band with more depth than their contemporaries.

That was how I viewed it anyway. Yet while I enjoy both songs, I don't think that the pairing works.

I keep forgetting that it's a Pumpkins song and not a LICD b-side.

T&T are you asking what the online reaction was back then? If I remember correctly, people liked it, and it was I think the 2nd real James song we had back then, and people liked it for that alone, you know?

I personally never liked it though, thought it was a toss-off. UNTIL recently (like last year), when I rediscovered the box set, I realized that it's a well-composed and arranged song, with some great vocal performances by James and Nina. So now it's one of my favorites of the boxset, and if I'd have to make a disc fo the 14-best, that would definitely be on it.

In 1995 when I was 12 years old and bought the BWBW single and was expecting more heavy rawk I didn't really like the song much. But now I dig it.

I think 'Believe' is a really great song too. That one should have been on the album along with 'The Boy' which would have gone great right after 1979.

Screw you guys - it's the perfect ending to Dawn to Dusk. It's such a pretty, delicate little song. Besides - it comes after Porcelina!

i only heard said sadly when i got the box set, late 96, and to me it was part of the pumpkins sound. of course it was followed by 5 varied covers, but i liked the whole disc.

My friend bought the single and hated the b-side...but I liked it for the same reason the Pumpkins were at the time becoming my favorite band--variety. It was a completely different type of song, but still the Pumpkins.

If he put Jupiter's Lament there... you'd never think twice about replacing it with TMD.

Said Sadly is good, but I'm not inspired to go back and listen to it much. Unlike The Boy or Believe, it doesn't fit that "I'm happy to be sad" Pumpkins vibe...

Take Me Down is a gorgeous song with a beautiful dreamy sleepytime vibe. Perfect ending to the first disc right before WBFTT kicks it back into gear on the second disc. Jupiter's Lament wouldn't work in that spot at all and Take Me Down is a better song. Lay off the crack pipe.
