Band: The Pulsars

How discovered: They opened for Weezer during their Pinkerton tour.

Sound like: Alternative + pop hooks + computer sounds

song that I defy you to not like: "Technology"

other comments: The band only released one absolutely perfect album before they broke up. http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/frown.gif

song that I defy you to not like: "Dead Wrestlers"

other comments: The sound like a modern 80's band, or "nu new wave"

(your turn, people)

I agree Bis are shit
my turn, you might know these guys if you're aussie.
Band - Rocket Science

Discovered - Supporting Even and You Am I during a few tours

Sound Like - The band use a theramin, a highly under-rated instrument. they play straight forward psychodelic-tinged power pop with a late 60's feel.

Songs that Rock - Burn In Hell, One Robot, Run Like A Gun

Band: The Residents

How discovered: after hearing Primus cover one of their tunes on Miscellaneous Debris (the tune in question being "Hello Skinny"), i went out and bought one of their albums.

Sound like: uhhhh....kind of hard/impossible to describe. at first, i was actually frightened by the music. i figured if the music was powerful enough to elicit fear, then it deserved a little more checking out. i'm now a rabid fan of their work.

Song i defy you to LIKE: any.

Other comments: this avante-garde band has been around for 30 years now, and to this day no one knows who the members are. they believe that individual recognition takes away from their collective art, and so have kept their identities a secret. on stage, they perform usually dressed in tuxedos with giant eyeballs for heads (complete with tophats), save for Mr. Skull, whose eyeball head was stolen while on tour years ago. he now wears, you guessed it, a black skull.

every album they've put out has been a concept album of some sort. for example, one of their most critically acclaimed albums, "Eskimo", is based entirely on actual eskimo ceremonies and legends (i forget the specific tribe).
then there's "The Commercial Album", in which the Residents figure that in the future, music is so watered down and the attention span of the general public so short that pop songs are reduced to minute-long commercial jingles. the album is comprised of forty of these jingles, representing thier own bizarre Top 40.

The Residents are also credited with being the pioneers of the music video, and have works in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art.

other comments: this bands a lot of fun to listen to. Very influenced by the Misfits, but they've also got some wierd noise stuff happening in a few songs, can barely understand what the hell they're saying, but its good modern punk, which is hard to come by.

Band: Lifter Puller

How discoverd: I went to heckle them at a show in 1999, but they rocked just to damned hard! Godamned them! The bass player nearly fell on me in a rockinroll rage. I've been hooked ever since.

Sound like: art-punk; Les Savy Fav meets old school hiphop-esque, beat-poet rantings...

Song: Lifter Puller VS The End of The Evening

Other comments: Lyrics concern the seedy Minneapolis underworld, with pimps and junkies, ballers and ravers. Lyrics also tells a story, spread through 3 albums and an EP, about the Nighclub Fires, and reoccuring characters Nightclub Dwight, The Eyepatch Guy, and the ever-ravin Jenny. LFTR PLLR broke up after the album Fiestas and Fiascos, in 2000, arguably one of the best releases that year. Go to www.lifterpuller.com for more info and see two live shows in NY at www.dcn.com ...

Jesse: Dude, did you fart? It smells like poo...
Mason: Yes, I did fart... *and* I smell like poo.

------------------
.....Then they went new wave and broke up because they were afraid of Britney.

I'm so goth, I don't say "black," I say "blahhwwwkkk."

I like Scratching Post. They're Canadian and I heard about them from my friend Carolyn who's obsessed with them. They are like...scary rock music but not evil sounding or anything. That sounded really blonde. I dunno how to describe them. They're good. http://www.scratchingpost.com

Unless it was just you playing all the instruments and only listened to it yourself for your own enjoyment, it's impossible to know a band that nobody's heard of.

That being said, everyone should check out these two bands:

Loudermilk
Sinisstar (I swear the vocalist sounds like a cross between Axl Rose and Marilyn Manson)

aw,man,I thought I was the only one!!
The album that song is on is an alright one,I guess.Pretty basic. They had one before that one--I have it, but haven't given it a spin.I bought their tape in 1997, but bought the CD four years ago--they're a guilty pleasure.

My pick:Leah Andreone

How discovered:saw used CD for $3 and gave it a whirl

sounds like:folk rock, but with a jazz influence

songs you'd like: "starstruck bastard", and "come sunday morning"

other comments:um...check her out?
