Default Worst SP tour

Just wondering what people's thoughts on this are, given that the current tour is getting so much praise here and according to BC. I know that SP in South America after MTAE was pretty bad, but I am not much of a connoisseur of their live music.

RATM tour was so sad

at least with Mike and Nicole there seemed to be some integrity and warmth

I saw the band with Nicole and Mike (before Oceania tho), the ratm/killers (monuments) version, the reunion and the 2019 band.

I would say I liked them all. The killers/ratm era was very week in terms of skills, but Billy seemed to be more relaxed than ever. For that reason I enjoyed myself. Plus, Marilyn Manson played with them that night, as an unannounced guest.

The songs played on the 2010 tour were great for casual fans, but the venues were so small (3k or under).

Probably the Brad Wilk tour. The Oceania shows for really bad by the end, but they were fun at the beginning and the band had a good vibe. Although Billy’s belly was inexcusable.

Byrne/Nicole era was rough, but there seemed to be seem genuine passion at the beginning. Also, you could see why Billy went with Nicole and Mike. It might not have worked out with Mike, but it was clear he was inspired by Jimmy's drumming. Nicole could play the old bass parts, but added a cool swing to newer stuff that had not been present in any other lineup. By the time we got to 2012/2013 though, it seemed even Billy knew any hope of that lineup working was gone.

To me, rock bottom was 2014/early 2015 with Brad Wilk and Mark Stoermer. I'm sure both those guys are great musicians, and I like their respective bands, but it was so clear Billy was scraping the bottom of the barrel to find "names" to play the songs over people who actually clicked with the material.

I ended up seeing the band in 2015 in Atlanta, but did not get tickets until word came out that Jimmy was playing. When the announced the tour, I assumed it was either going to be Mark and Brad again, or some other random touring musicians. It was the only time I planned on completely missing a Smashing Pumpkins show (I even saw them in 2013).

The End Times tour was exceedingly mediocre even with Jimmy. Half empty arenas and everyone leaving after 1979.

From the 90s - I never have any burning desire to listen to any Adore tour recordings

I enjoyed the 2014 show in London but I'm glad that lineup didn't last long and that things finally improved

I've only seen them post 2000, and I'd rank them like this:

1. March 2016 (In Plainsong/James comeback show)
2. August 2018 (Shiny and Oh So Bright)
3. December 2008 (20th anniversary)
4. December 2018 (KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas)
5. September 2007 (KROQ LA Invasion)
6. July 2015 (End Times)
7. October 2012 (Oceania)

Every show was good (though some were better than others), but the Oceania show was by far the worst due to Jimmy's absence. The March 2016 and August 2018 shows are by far the best ones I've seen.

i remember feeling really depressed around the '08 tour that this band i had just gotten very very into only about a year ago was currently jumping ship in such a way, billy running around in spider outfits banging timpanis & all that. of course, this is just me recalling my feelings at the time cos if i actually stacked it up against the following tours i'm sure, objectively, it would trample them

or would it?

Classic Pitchfork article title is relevant here:

https://pitchfork.com/news/34093-sma...is-a-shitshow/

I would pick the 2008 shows too. Setlists were weird as hell. They seemed not into it. Were playing huge rooms billed under some imaginary 20th anniversary thing.

I couldn't stand Nicole. She basically admitted that her bass parts were deliberately busy and intrusive in the name of "inspiring girls". It's like she was just using the band as a platform for a poorly executed social justice message.

I have no problem with inspiring girls, but you may want to try doing that by playing what the song needs first.

I was really into what Billy was doing post-SP and was disappointed he brought the band back at what was clearly not the right time.

Those anniversary shows were promising imo and were the last hope before it all really went to shot starting in 2009. I didn’t bother going to an SP show until is was announced jimmy was back in 2015.

But I love free improv, so I was into that whole weird set the controls bit.
