My dad is 54. That's not old, but heart disease runs in our family. Dad had a brother who died at age 47 of a massive heart attack. Pap died at 59, just 3 weeks after having open heart surgery and Gram died at 61 due to complications that arose after having a heart catheterization. Kinda makes me feel doomed... |

he had been doing ok by the end of the first week, albeit he had absolutely no short term memory - he would forget things in about 5 minutes, and i would constantly have to remind him of what had happened and why i couldnt let him stand up and walk to the toilet. for some reason they stopped his fluid tablets, which meant a lot of fluid accumulated in his body from all the drips and such he was attached to. by the end of week 2, he was sent to rehab, almost 15 kilos over his "ideal" weight - at home, he was best at 65kg, if he went maybe even 2kg above or below he was in trouble - where one nurse went completely off at him for wetting the bed, because he didn't remember to call for a nurse ("it's an absolute disgrace, a grown man wetting the bed! you should be ashamed of yourself!")... then the next day or the day after, he was left unattended on the toilet, and he again forgot to call the nurse, so he went to help himself up, and obviously he was very weak, so he overexerted and had another heart attack, and hurt his side when he fell. so he went back to hospital. he was on lots of painkillers because of his side, because the nurses couldn't move him otherwise. but this made him too doped up to eat, so he went hungry. he was on a drip for a while, but he had too much fluid in his body so they had to stop that. they put him back on fluid tablets but his kidneys were working too hard and they dried out. they think that this is what eventually killed him. um... also in 2003 he had pneumonia and nearly died, while i was in my final year of high school, also he had a small papilloma in his bladder in 2004 or 2005 which caused him to piss blood for a month, he also had a bad bout of sciatica, for about a year or so, i think in 2002... he couldn't sleep lying down - i believe it was after that when he picked up the pneumonia, from not being able to move around so much. you never know when the next attack might be or how much time you have left, so yeah, this time is precious. if you think talking to me might help in any way then feel free to PM.
