By the end of the movie they make it almost a Resident Evil movie.

Guyver - 1/5
Dumb american version of a japanese style superhero with a lot of gross body horror stuff. It could be ok, but it's just SO dumb. Mark Hammil being in it is hilarious though.

The Crawlers - 2/5
This movie was charming in how bad it was, the killer vines always looked incredibly fake and the actors had to try their damndest to try and make it seem like they were being brutally murdered.
Also apparently the best way to deal with nuclear waste is for the townspeople to roll the barrels around with zero protection.

Deathstalker - 1/5
This movie was really rapey in an uncomfortable way. It had a couple enjoyable moments, but just about every other scene was someone getting raped. Even the hero enjoys raping women, ugh.

Annihilation 6.5/10

Great premise, pretty great effects, some thought-provoking themes, but felt like a bit of a missed opportunity.

A lot of it, for me, is down to Portman. Good god I wish she was capable of making more than that one facial expression she delivers throughout the entire movie. You know the one. “Very Concerned Portman,” if you will. She’s an actress i want to root for, but she just doesn’t convince me in this

Lady Bird - 9/10

Really down-to-earth and not (as I had feared) precious in the slightest.

Really feels like a slice of life from an average teenage American in the early '00s. Great performances all around.

Eh it's sort of by design, I rather enjoy watching B-Movies. Of course I can't in good conscience call these films good, but we have a blast watching them.

But hey, not gonna turn down any hot recs if you have good ones!

Asylum (2014) - 1/5
This film is so strange, they realized their little horror movie was so terrible that they tried to salvage it turning into a comedy where two editors are watching the horror movie in the editing bay and commenting on it the whole way through MST3K style. It's terrible as both a horror movie and as a comedy.

Literally having somebody point out why a film is bad seems like a lazy attempt at self-awareness. Would have been smarter if the editors just edited it awkwardly to make scary parts awkward and funny. Or edited it with comedy-style beats and conventions.

Game Night, B+, pretty good for a single-use-only kind of movie. Too many clumsy movie references for most people, probably. It's not one of my pet hates, plus I like Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. If you don't like them, you will probably hate Game Night.

Confessions was HEAVY. Thanks for the rec pt. So much Boris made me happy. But one problem: the quote from Crime and Punishment is said to be by Raskolnikov, who killed his wife. He didn't. He killed a money lender and her sister.

The Commuter - 7/10

Liam Neesons does his trashy b-flick action pose once more and it is great.

Jigsaw - 5/10

Less gory and excessive than the other sequels, but still needlessly convoluted and complicated. Doesn't do much to justify its own existence.

There was only one other person in my showing. Made it somehow even creepier.

Hereditary: A-

There a couple of glaring problems with the script but the whole thing is so masterfully executed that it wasn't until I was long out of the cinema that I noticed them. All the performances are fantastic (Toni Collette deserves an Oscar), Colin Stetson's score is superb, the cinematography is gorgeous and the way the whole thing slowly but surely escalates from psychological horror into visceral terror of the classic horror persuasion is executed brilliantly. My only complaints are that the "real" human trauma story and the more traditional horror elements never quite mesh the way they feel like they're supposed to, and for a film that hid a lot of clues in the corners of the frame it really heavily telegraphed its main twist, which detracted from the joy of piecing it together for me.
