Beginners' level tends to be mostly focused on vocabulary/everyday phrases, thus fairly easy. Your professor will give you the grammatical rules and that might look scary but don't be put off! Spanish is also pretty fun and there's so many movies and so much music that you can use to improve your understanding/make it more organic to learn. You'll be fine!

Did you have to take Spanish specifically or could you choose from a selection of modern languages?

in florida, you have to take two semesters of the same language to get a Bachelor's in anything. latin doesn't count.

It doesn't have to be Spanish, there are quite a few others. The only other one I have even considered is sign language. Any recommendations?

I also have a Hispanic friend who will tutor me if I need it, so that's a reason to choose Spanish. and living in south FL, Spanish and French are the two big languages spoken besides englsih

i get a free subscription to mujer magazine.

https://tradepub.freebizmag.com/2000...d=108140815009

just make up a bunch of junk for those industry and company fields.

tim and i watch a lot of spanish movies. one day we won't have to use subtitles. off the top of my head I recommend REC (y REC 2), Amores Perros, and Pan's Labyrinth. Spanglish is a wonderful little movie, too, but it also has English (OOOOBVIOUSLY). Probably good for picking up and recognizing basic phrases.

we've downloaded Como Agua Para Chocolate to watch this weekend

Do you think sign language would be useful for you? I assume Spanish is the right choice if you're in Florida. I took French for my undergrad requirements, and loved it so much I ended up getting a minor in it. I speak decent French now, which is cool. I think the main thing with languages is you have to like either how it sounds or find the culture appealing in some way. I always liked French films (like this lovely masterpiece) and chansons à la Ne Me Quitte Pas and Avec le Temps and so that was easy. I'd probably be bored to tears learning sign language but my roommate back then liked it! My school allowed us Latin as an option and I was so tempted but lol

Aw I took a look at the Mujer magazine thing but it looks like I'd have to be in the US. Thanks anyway! I've never seen REC 1/2, but love the other two. I've been meaning to watch Spanglish for a good 6 years or so now. Last film in Spanish I saw was Machuca and it was beautiful. I recommend Cría Cuervos and The Spirit of the Beehive, though they're both pretty dark (same little girl in both, she's fantastic). I have good understanding of Spanish, I just can't speak it in the right intonation at all.

Sorry I'm kinda obsessed with languages. I think I finally really understood dative pronouns in German!
