Because at this point in SP2, Billy was convinced that people were only turning up to hear the hits.

I'm sure his plan was to cull all his old fans from the herd and start over fresh as if the Pumpkins were a new band on the scene that could connect with a whole new generation of fans.

pretty sure his stepmom regularly beat the shit out of him but idk. there was some interview or something where he talked about learning not to cry, not to respond in any way because that kept a part of yourself to yourself, that the abusive person couldn't touch. and that resonates with me, as someone who had an abusive childhood. my childhood afforded me many freedoms as well but it also fucked me up in a lot of ways. obviously corgan wasn't literally tortured or anything. but just because an abusive parent isn't literally using you as a punching bag or burning you with cigarettes, that doesn't mean you're overreacting or somehow being a little bitch.

like i said before, things affect people different ways. this is obviously all speculation but for someone to end up the way billy did, with regards to his narcissism and control issues, it's almost guaranteed that his childhood was abnormal

He had a lot of pressure on him, so that makes sense. The way I read it before was he was having a hissy fit that he wasn't as popular as Kurt and it made him want to kill himself. This sounds more like he was under a lot of pressure to not only write a good album but for it to be as popular as nirvana/pearl jam and it was making him miserable
