Whenever MTV played "Today" in heavy rotation, which was probably late '93. I became obsessed with SP when MCIS came out. I got it for Christmas and soon began buying anything with SP on it.
Here's an alternate topic: When did your liking for SP greatly decrease? It's easy for me to say when Jimmy killed Melvoin. That took the wind out of my sails pretty fast. |

Lots of good stories in this thread! As my first post, I thought here would be a good place to start. I became a fan in 1995/6 when I was in fourth grade. The story behind it?
I went to school one day and my good friend asked me out the blue (and quite seriously): "you know bullet with butterfly wings?" I just tilted my head like a confused puppy and stared at him as he reiterated: "Have you heard the song "Bullet With Butterfly Wings???" I didn't recognize the name and was kind of taken back by it. I knew my friend was wierd and this question just strengthened those opinons. I eventually saw the video and knew just what he was talking about. Back then it was all about Weezer, Soul Asylum, Blind Mellon, Offspring, Greenday and Nirvana. After seeing the Mellon Collie videos on TV (as a 10 year old I was limited to only what MTV would feed kids like me) I bought the album on tape, and it became all about The Smashing Pumpkins. So yeah, I became a fan, but I didn't realise I was one until rap started taking over and grunge was slowly fading. I thought I must be a fan, because everything else just sounds like crap. And also because after a while I realised I was listening to the same tapes over and over with not much room for anything else. Last edited by Mercury Crying : 09-23-2004 at 02:49 AM. |

summer of 1991
ktxt, the texas tech's radio station in my old hometown of lubbock, was always good about playing new stuff. they played i am one & it was the best thing i had heard in a long time. so i went down to late, lamented university records & picked up the last copy of the gish cassette on the shelf. i had seen the tristessa subpop release there before, but i never picked it up, since i hated all things subpop at the time. but, by the time i'd gotten gish, it was already gone. |

I borrowed a Faith No More tape from a friend, and there was Siamese Dream from Spaceboy till the end on it. I thought it's Soul Asylum as that was written on the tape.

Summer of 1996 I had just graduated from U of Kansas and finally had disposable income. I remembered SP on 120 minutes, but up untill then never really bought much music past the Beasties and Public Enemy cause I was a cheap bastard and treasured, electricity, pizza & beer...silly me.
I was living in Wichita KS, that summer and they were going to come there for a concert the weekend of Labor day. My sister had invited me to her fiances place at the Lake of the Ozarks that same weekend which I choose instead. Instead of going to the concert I bought MCIS to listen to on the way to the Ozarks. Part of what sealed the deal was Best Buy had it for $17.99. What a bargain for two CD's!! I started to the Ozarks right before dusk with my moon roof down a full bag of seeds and enough Mnt Dew to stun a horse. I was absolutely blown away. I didn't even get through the entire album since I kept repeating, songs over and over. Nothing sucked it was amazing. It was one of those perfect summer evenings, slightly humid, the smell of cut grass along the turnpike, beautiful colors above changing into a starry sky and a perfect album erasing all my fears. |

I was obsessively listening to Siamese Dream before Mellon Collie came out. I don't know if it was late 94 or early 95, though...

I loved Disarm from the moment I heard it. Ditto with the clip. When BWBW, Zero etc came out I bought MCIS. Played it non stop. Didn't hear much about them in Australia for a while so I forget them a bit (ashamed...) then I bought greatest hits and realised what a fool I'd been! Now have all the CDs DVDs etc...
Die everyday knowing that I never saw them live. Billy changed my life, sad but true. The most amazing thing was the virtual anihilation of my 10 year The Cure obsession. Only Billy could have the power to do that! |
