too late. put it on last night. I got up to make dinner in the middle of it but I really could not believe how terrible it was. It had some value as a comedy

The only thing I can defend in that film is the effects/character designs of the apes. Don't know how Burton fucked up such great source material with a top-notch cast (Mawky Mawk aside).

I'll be curious to know what your kids make of the old films. Escape is my personal favorite. It's just so fucking... weird.

Battle Royale - 5/5

Holy crap this movie was great. Lots of arterial spray, campiness in the right amounts and some nice character moments. My favorite girl didn't make it tho, that was sad.

Yeah I'm looking forward to seeing these. I thought they would laugh at Jaws but they were totally into it. And A Nightmare on Elm St gave the older one nightmares (the younger one wasn't allowed to watch it). So I'm curious, too.

My husband wanted to show them Revenge of the Nerds and I was like um, I'm pretty sure that movie involves stalking, and non-consensual sex, and sexual assault, and revenge porn, so let's watch it first.

And oh my god. It is fucking terrible. Like...these nerds are fucking awful nerds.

I remember loving this and thinking that the Hunger Games was a total rip off.

Oh totally. I came from it from the other side, of seeing Hunger Games first.
But it's impossible to not see they drew a LOT of inspiration from Battle Royale.

Yeah, I try to take context into consideration when it comes to looking back on older movies, but Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Porky's et al absolutely DO NOT hold on. They are mostly rapey as shit. And even worse, not all that funny either.

Have you and the kids broken into the old Apes flicks yet?

Cool. Is there a lot in there that would appeal to Dune fans who aren't really familiar with jodorowsky? Thanks

To be honest, I came at it as a Jodorowsky fan that wasn't hugely familiar with Dune.

From what I could tell, though, they did quite a job of creating its look and I suspect that a fan of the book would appreciate seeing how it might have turned out. Jodorowsky is obviously an absolute nutter and the documentary was always going to play off that, but a decent amount of the run time did go into discussing art direction and how they planned to approach the story. Much of what Giger contributed, for example, was later reworked into what became Alien.

Yes it is definitely worth watching whatcolor especially if you're into dune. jodorowsky had an incredible vision. i don't understand why he doesn't animate it himself.

Tale of the Princess Kaguya A++++++

Wow I don't know how I missed this. This is one of the best Ghiblis I have seen. Rivals Mononoke and Ponyo. Its pretty mature and restrained in the artwork and the story is very simple on the surface. blew me away.

I'm looking forward to finding out that it's not really worth leaving the house for and that it's something I can just catch on Netflix. But I'm ready to be surprised. Do tell us what you think.

I finally watched Mulholland Drive. Lotta cool boobs in that movie. The final 2/3 took a hell of a turn.

That movie is a mindfuck. Beware of Inland Empire. You might not make it thru with your sanity intact.

Hopefully it means a return to bigger and better horror films in the mainstream. The 2010s have been pretty dismal for horror.

IT

Well-made, more creepy than scary (though there are a few good jump-scares), a snappy script and good acting from the kids. The flow of the movie was a little messy at times (some of the scene-to-scene transitions seemed a bit abrupt) but that's a minor quibble. Wish they had delved a little more into the mythos behind Pennywise (in the end, he's just...kinda there for no real rhyme or reason; thus he lacks the raw monster gravitas of say, Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees). Regardless, you will root for these Losers.

B+

Girl's Trip
4 stars out of 5

Way better than those white girl movies in the same vein. It was actually funny and the women were like real people. Except Jada Pinkett, who never ever ages.
