it does seem obvious, I just never made the connection. I've overlooked this song by and large tbh. Although I like it, it's kind of been eclipsed for me by a lot of other Adore songs. I'm not sure I have ever really focused on the lyrics. Something about them always made me feel they are a bit contrived. The whole "storytelling" thing is so unlike Billy's usual songwriting... yeah I dunno. I guess it's time to smoke mad trees and listen to this album

contrived is the perfect word to describe them actually.
i mean it's still fairly well made, but you can just clearly see how he set out to do a storytelling song, from start to finish. it's still pretty good though. i recently listened to the CRC demo or whatever from the Adore reissue, and realized how much the production boggles it down on the album.

the CRC demo is sloppy, no doubt, but suddenly the song comes alive. more dynamics, emotion, and an amazingly beautiful guitar solo (courtesy of james, i suspect) thrown in. the album version is much flatter and meandering.

Goddamn James' guitar parts in that are so so good

And whatever session drummer is playing on that is perfect for the song

Imagine how good Adore would be if the whole thing was produced like that, like a live band feel

that version is fucking killer. billy's voice is much more emotive and not as focused on perfection. the song has got this sort of dark country, tired rambling feel to it. totally different than the album version. however I do not wish all of Adore was like this. Adore is so good the way it is
