what should billy do to improve modern SP

imo, he should really just get james and jimmy into the studio with a competent producer (butch vig?) and get to work on an album. having true bandmates who he works with instead of yes men like jeff and some filler drummer could easily propel the band's sound back to what it used to be. billy thinks he knows what the SP sound is but without other musicians to collaborate with and kick him in the ass when he has bad ideas, then the album just ends up being unrefined with poorly executed ideas.

what direction do you all want the band to head in? besides retirement.

just to be clear i'm not saying that jimmy or james are required for the album to be good at all, but if they're going to have a drummer then they better come close to jimmy. good drums are an essential for any SP album.

Work with a full band and keep them around for a while. All of the releases that people shit on since 2007: Zeitigest, Teargarden, and Monuments all resulted from Billy handling the majority (if not all) drum related duties himself and having a rotating cast of characters fill in the rest (Jimmy Chambelrin, Mark Tulin, Tommy Lee, Jeff Schroeder, etc.).

Byrne's drumming annoyed me as much as the next person here, but I do not think it was coincidence that the one album the public embraced (Oceania) came from a full band unit that had worked together for a few years.

All the producers billy has worked with are competent and qualified to put out something great. The problem is that Billy co-produces the albums. Get that bald faggot away from the mixing board. write your songs, perform 1,000,000 overdubs, but for the love of god - let SOMEONE ELSE decide what is good and what's getting cut.

Billy is lost between what he wants and what he thinks the audience wants. And then, he gets lost with either giving what the audience wants or not.

He has now the opportunity to create something fresh with an acoustic album, which is what he's been doing best for at least 10 years now, but instead he chose to not record that album anymore, and will now make another "rock album" cause "that's what people expect from the band at this moment".

This is right. It might be difficult for him as he's been shit for far longer than he was good.
One weird trick he could try is hiring talented people to write, perform and produce his music. Literally get another bands album and put a smashing pumpkins sticker on it.
