I find their first two albums, with that lineup, are more compelling than any other fusion from that era. And that's mostly to do with Billy Cobham.

this whole album of his is great too

thanks, I needed more stuff like that. I bought some of mahavishnu's albums after the first two too and they never really clicked with me as much.

generally I find that the ability to make good music forms a bell curve on the axis of technical musical ability

i find that it's the same trajectory as being able to be a good person vs. being rich

overlap is almost non existing

I can't talk to any old cruster about Tangerine Dream (entry level cosmiche) without him trying to bring up Mahavishnu Orchestra. Definitely in the small category of bands I actively dislike. Not trying to derail the thread.

For fans of Frank Zappa.

mahavishnu orchestra - the inner mounting flame
mahavishnu orchestra - birds of fire
don caballero - 2
don caballero - American don

that's right I called you out

i have a love/hate relationship with drumline stuff, but it sounds so fucking good:

nothing like hearing the ring of the tenors on a warm summer's day

I love this whole EP. Jon Theodore (mars volta) playing hip hop beats with the ferocity of John Bonham. This is their only release. It's so fucking good.

this starts with some amusing stage banter, but glenn kotche's drumming on this version is sublime

i'm officially reviving this thread

happened to come across this vid as a fun fact (dude joins band as drummer after they saw his cover of their song), but this kid really is jaw droppingly good in every sense of the word.

and on top of it all he's in PERFECT groove, man.

it's not only that he arrives at every beat precisely at the perfect time - he plays it with the perfect amount of attitude

hot damn

one of the few drummers I've heard that makes music that's the full package by itself

not that that's bad or anything, but to me it's not much different than other drummers who make solo-ish music with a few tuned drums in their drumset.

if you dig that kinda stuff i imagine you'd be really into indian Tabla players. a beautifully expressive instrument

yeah I like the tuned drum thing

guy was a very accomplished jazz drummer before recording something like 17 solo albums incorporating electronics
