Billy, just STFU already and release the thing online like other successful bands have done in the past few years. You really do sound like an out of touch dinosaur that just doesn't get it, and I think that's because your explanations are in truth elaborate rationalizations for why you do not have the notoriety or relevance you feel you deserve.

People don't buy albums anymore? Yes they do. The songs may be scattered amongst five zillion other songs in your playlist and completely out of order because they enjoy variety, but they are still there. And of course there are still people that listen to entire albums.

People have stopped listening to music with their completely undivided attention? Erm...since when did they ever only listen to music in that way? People have always thrown on music in the background as they do other things.

People only listen to nothing except singles anymore? What the hell - if anything, due to the ubiquity and easy accessibility of music, people's awareness and inclusion of non-singles in their listening repertoire has increased since they don't have to commit to an entire album but can choose the songs they like for inclusion. In effect, people are able to create their own "singles selections" off an album rather than what's shoved down their throat on the radio.

People need a complete multimedia experience to enjoy music anymore? No they don't. What evidence is there of this? Good music still speaks for itself and doesn't need additional gimmicks. Hell, the music videos he speaks of provided the original "multimedia experience" but they have fallen by the wayside in current years compared to their peak in the 90s.

Youtube doesn't sell albums? Really? Then how do you explain shit like Justin Bieber? If something goes viral it can.

The whole point of his announcement seemed to be his usual critique of the music industry, but with a vision for his new way to release Oceania.

So more bait-&-switch from the master baiter.

he has to understand that times change, people change. it matters not at all if Oceania turns out to be the best thing he's ever done, it will not sell close to what they did in the mid-90s and the band will never, ever be famous again. it's a cycle of gaining popularity, if you're lucky (and/or good) plateauing out as a major commercial entity and then a decline (rapid or steady). an artist has to accept it, unfair as it is.

like stumpy says, when it comes down to it he's desperately trying to find a reason why he's no longer as big/relevant as he was and putting it down to things beyond his control. which is true to an extent, but he seems obsessed with re-establishing himself as a major act and not just making the best record he can and accepting modest commercial returns. why the continuing delay with Oceania? there is no perfect moment to release the album, it won't matter, it isn't going to sell millions of albums, irrespective of how they releae it.

Is it just me or is this reminding everyone of the whole Machina disaster, only this time instead of the "Web", it's "social media". Even the shitty backdrop for the interviews with logo's all over it makes me think of that stupid Sony synergy crap that was happening back then right before the stock market imploded. He always finds a way to take the cool thing other bands are doing and make it corporate and shitty.

Hey people are into weird concepts right now, I know I'll sign a deal with Sony and make a shitty Saturday morning cartoon.

Hey people like collectible packaging right now, I know I'll sign a deal with every box store and make 20 different covers.

Hey Trent Reznor is using social media and bootlegging his own album, let me go to SXSW...

You just complain! Lol ffs. You are like kids with your dream hero dead!

Understand this:
You will be fat as billy at his age, probably you are fat yet with yours 30 yo.
Why do you bother he saying a lot of fucks? You do it all the time. Who cares?
All one of you would be annoyed if someone refered to a big moment of your life with a "when you were big"
He is more intelligent than all of us here, it really looks like... including me.

His speech about music industry problems make sense and he really has big points:
People dont buy music anymore
Ppl dont listen albums often as before
There arent BIG world bands and unforgetable bands like before, in a few years nobody will know anynore who was artic monkeys or coldplay.
Music industry is completely fucked up and because of this they just promote Justin Bierer and the good music many times stay in the garages lost forever...
It explains too why Mtv doesnt even play music anymore, it is sad!

He points the problems but he doesnt give the solutions, and you do you know the solution? So stfu.
