Deafheaven has announced New Bermuda, the follow-up to the band’s excellent 2013 breakthrough record, Sunbather. Coming from the black metal outfit’s new ANTI- home, the LP will be out October 2nd.

New Berumda’s five tracks were recorded live with long-time production and engineering partner Jack Shirley once again joining the band in studio. Sessions took place in April of this year alternatively at Oakland’s 25th Street Recording and East Palo Alto’s Atomic Garden Recording.

In a press release, frontman George Clarke says the record seeks “to describe a new destination in life, a nebulous point of arrival, and an unknown future where things get swallowed up and dragged into darkness.” Above, find the oil painting cover art by Allison Schulnik; below, find a short album trailer and the tracklist. Pre-orders are going on now via the band’s online store.

Fuck yeah, as if I wasn't having trouble picking an AOTY between Cloud Rat, Earl Sweatshirt and Self Defense Family.

Also this band deserves some kind of award for most consistent use of typeface that looks how the music sounds. Hella feeling that new logo but I'll miss the slender SNBTHR font

http://thehardtimes.net/2015/01/14/d...sleep-onstage/

Quote:
PORTLAND, Ore. — Deafheaven’s bassist, Stephen Clark, was lulled to sleep in the middle of his band’s Red Bull Sound Select show in Portland last night. Some might think this would be cause for teasing, but critics are already raving that Clark slept through Deafheaven’s ambient shoegaze black-metal bullshit perfectly.

“It was a flawless performance. Just absolutely flawless. These guys are creating a new genre,” one critic wrote on his Pitchfork worship blog. “When he started snoring I knew I was witnessing the best set of the year.”

And he wasn’t the only critic out there who enjoyed the set.

“They are just so dark. I’ve never seen anything like it. I can’t even wrap my head around how they get so dark,” another critic wrote before concluding that the band must put something in their wash.

Clark explained his predicament to reporters outside the show.

“I was standing there, laying down the bass line for ‘Vertigo’ when I felt this warm calmness wash over my body. It was like I was all wrapped up in one of our signature Deafheaven Blankets©, being gently rocked from side to side,” he said. “It was so cozy that I thought I’d just close my eyes for a second.”

The next thing Clark remembers is Deafheaven guitarist Kerry McCoy kicking him in the ass and yelling “this isn’t fucking funny” while the band attempted to finish the song. “I was tired, too, but I would never fall asleep on stage,” said McCoy. “This isn’t a fucking joke. Everyone was laughing. It’s not a joke. It’s not fucking funny. We’re creating a new genre.”

Deafheaven is no stranger to controversy. After cancelling a tour due to lost luggage containing all of their black clothes, the band had their rider leaked to the public with it stating that each band member requires three lint rollers before taking the stage. A picture of the vocalist, George Clarke, also went viral several months ago when he too was accused of falling asleep mid-performance.

The Hard Times reached out to the Deafheaven vocalist for comment but his response was too low in the mix for us to understand.

All kids who listen to Deafheaven (who are decent) should be made to listen to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk

I love all things trve and cvlt and I get why cvlt types dismiss them - they make music that's pretty, whimsical and relatively accessible. I just don't think of them as a black metal band, I don't really listen to them when I feel like listening to something grim or brutal. I see em as a great shoegaze band.

They're prettier than black or thrash metal, and shoegazier than prog metal but nearly as technical. It's noise. Their sound will probably develop somewhat on this one so we'll see what direction they take it.

I'm seeing them for the first time next month. I hope we still get mostly Sunbather songs - don't they play only like 5 songs per show?

This is not a genre I regularly frolic in by any measure, but I do like Deafheaven. I can't really say how they compare to their peers and I don't like that the dude just screams through every song. I also don't usually go for double kick drum because fuck that. But I think the guitars in this band are awesome, and their songs are very powerful. They have a great way of taking things to the brink of being pure noise and then bringing in these sweeping, beautiful guitar lines that really gets me.
