1. i immediate like the beat. feels early 90's almost ride/lush/tonya donnally ? actually i think this is tonya or one of her band incarnations, it sounds familiar but i'm not 100% sure ive heard it before or if im familiar with it. very catchy tune, i like this song. want to sing along and dance in my short shorts and frilly panties and sing into an ice cream microphone. i love the lyrics.

2. another one i immediately like the vibe of. pretty sure i've never heard this before. the guys voice is okay, but kind of flat. the music is fantastic. the energy is great and makes me want to punch a shark in the face because i have so much energy. is this a signed band? just by the vocals, it sounds like it is a bit sub par in production. that's my only sound-engineer gripe. otherwise kind of falls into pinback territory for me, which is fine.

3. drop acid! take me to see your leader! there is no tomorrow.... that's right, we're all gonna die and float up like white sheet children, dancing, screaming and howling with fire in our hands. burn down the church. rape the women. kill the children. some lethal fury going on here. can you tell i not just like this, but LOVE it? this reminds me of all the other good contemporary bands like asobi seksu and blonde redhead and stereolab and bardo pond but with a good dose of amphetamine shot straight in the heart. and then thrown in a vat of lsd. i wanna hug the wind. the way this ends is fanastic too. favorite song so far. love love love love it. shreds like a motherfucker.

4.

sorry, i have to put this on repeat for a while and i'll get to the rest.

Didn't 2 of these people fuck around last time on this?

I say send mixes that people made promptly to those who are waiting and to hell with idiots who volunteer to cop out or can't keep to deadlines. They can just post theirs when they get it done, im sure some of the people who missed this won't mind listening.

I know it was for free and for fun and all but I still feel bad for those who made a mix and did not get one back. That's a shitty deal. Like I said, a few of them might still come through but I am not going to PM them to death like I have the last two times. It just takes the fun out of this for me.

1. Nice song to kick this mix off. I know what song it is, but wont say since it also appears on my mix and my guy hasn't reviewed it yet.

2. The intro to this makes me think of the Casino Zone from Sonic2 or something. Cool music. This guy sounds unstable and I like when his robot buddy chimes in.

3. Dramtic vocals and powerful drums, sounds like something that'd you'd hear in 1930s Europe if time machines were common.

4. Some old Animal Collective? I have all their old ones but never get around to listen. Think I'll have to now. Fun stuff.

5. Might be a 90s alt song I've never heard before. Good thing it's sunny right now, feels good man.

6. Has the vocals of pre 9/11 society mixed with the must of post 9/11 society. If a midwestern Indie band played with a some scumbag in 77 NYC. More time travelling.

7. Good song here. Thought it was Of Montreal at first, but I don't think so. I like thier electronic Satanic Panic style, but would be more interested in their more twee stuff. Though the stuff I have heard was a little too pansy for me! This is a good common ground. I'm sure it's some Elephant Six band.

8. I'm really liking this song a lot. Always been interested in beachy kind of music, but could never find any I like. This does the trick. Brain Wilson had a really bad trip and caused him to write good music for once ;-)

9. Another summery kind of fun in the sun song. Could be Saturday Looks Good to Me.

10. It's an alright song. Don't know what else to say about that.

11. Like this one a lot too. Really good guitar and drum sounds. Can't really tell if this is a guy or girl singing.

12. Oh boy, Crystal Castles. Haven't listened to them for a HOT minute.

13. Half way thru this song, I gets strangely uplifting. I've heard this before, but don't know when. Glad to hear it again.

14. Oh cool, the lost track to the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.

15. Feeling this track. Could leave it on and picture myself strung out in a dumpster to shelter myself from the rain. When the song picks up, it sounds like Phil Elverum is rescuing me and taking me back to his lighthouse.

16. Nice basic shoegaze track. I guess all the next songs will be like this after that 11 minute romp.

17. No, I was wrong. Now this is the song I would have written while I was in that dumpster.

18. Spooky kind of song. Vocals of a 60s lounge singer with the band of exiled muscians, playing in a really fucked up nightclub. Want more of this. I feel like I've heard it before, maybe in the closing credits to a movie.

19. Another okay song, fits well with the rest of these.

20. I like the music to it. All girl indiepop kind of singers sound exactly the same to me, this could be any of them. I hope it's Beach House, my favorite of those kind of singers. The organ makes it seem likely.

21. This comes in really well following the last song. Nice groove to it. Chill song over all. Perfect song to hear while you're half asleep.

22. Great closing track. Loving it. Perfect vibe and quality to it.

Over all I like my mix a lot. A lot of variation in the beginning, but from track 15 on it flows really well. I like that section the most. From the types of songs here, Crystal Castles, and the itunes album info, I'm was thinking Redbull responsible for this but I see he did one already.

I finally got mine. Thanks to Erin for all the patience and the will to pull this through. I want to thank the guy who didn't send my mix because I got a brilliant one in return. And finally thanks to the guy who made this mix because even though it wasn't intended for me I really appreciated it. So here's my review...

Track 1

Really nice instrumental ambient piece in the vein of stars of the lid, boards of canada, except it's not them I think. Quite good way to start the compilation.

Track 2

Starts with an acoustic guitar strumming and piano in the background, the drums begin and so the low voice of david sylvian. The instruments, the vocals, the lyrics and the atmosphere make it a smooth, hypnotic and melodic song.

Track 3

Sweet synth intro on repeat, then synth bass and drums and after a while a fuzzy slow tempo guitar solo and looping synths making it a dreamy electro pop tune. The vocals are kind of standard indie but it works. I'd like to know who this band is.

Track 4

Another ambient track, waves of distorted calm synths. Really nice.

Track 5

This song is excellent. Thanks for reminding me of My Vitriol. It starts with a very distorted riff and then the sweetest shoegazing angular guitar. I absolutely love the guitar in this song. It's Vapour Trails if I remember correctly, which I think is a tribute to Ride's Vapour Trail.

Track 6

This song reminds me a lot of My Bloody Valentine, but unless I'm mistaken it's another band. I like the repetition and the distorted tape loop effect.

Track 7

Slow bubbly electric guitar, a lot of reverb. Very dreamy-shoegazing again. Vocals remind me of the male singer of Slowdive. Nice chorused guitar. Who are them?

Track 8

A more dissonant and dark ambient track. No synths I think, all guitar. Some seagull samples at the end. This is probably way older in time than the previous ambient/noise tracks from the mix.

Track 9

Evolving synth riff, it serts an uptempo dark and eastern tone. Very gothic deep voice and guitar. I feel like I should know this song but I can't place it. Reminds me of Peter Murphy. It's like gothic poetry, not really singing. It works as a middle of the mix track.

Track 10

The earlier track helped to set the mood, this is pure post punk, very reminiscent of joy division. Very interesting acoustic guitar towards the end of the song.

Track 11

Another english post-punk song. Funny lyrics. It kind of reminds me of The Who and The Kinks if they played post punk.

Track 12

Dizzy samples and then a distorted high guitar and a catchy bassline. Very hypnotic. I am the fly on the ointment and this is wire and I love it.

Track 13

Early Killing Joke I think. Not a huge fan but very fitting in the flow of the mix. I think the song could last less though.

Track 14

A lot of dissonant samples and distorted guitar making it sound chaotic . Dreamy very far in the background vocals that add a lot of contrast to the song. I have no idea who this is.

Track 15

Now a brighter guitar ridden instrumental. Ambient post rock. Reminds me of 1 Mile North and EITS. Nice song and my coup of tea.

Track 16

Aerogramme. Another band I haven't listened in ages. This song is epic, they've sometimes reminded of Piano Magic and this is a good example. Very dreamy organic guitars with early vintage electronic stuff. Strings and a gorgeous voice.

Track 17

Nice 90's song. It made me nostalgic even though I've never heard this band before.Very good guitar work and vocals. Who are they and why haven't I heard them before?

Track 18

Now we're into punk rock territory, man the guitar is absolutely awesome. I have no idea who this guys are but I want to hear more.

Track 19

English punk. Not a bad song by any means but I'm not a big fan of the psychedelic furs.

Track 20

Nice post punk song with light piano in the background, kinda jazzy. Oh this is Howard Devoto singing. Magazine. Nice song.

Track 21

Reverby acoustic guitar arpeggios and ethereal atmosphere. Girl singing. I don't like female singers, they belong in the kitchen. Skip.

Track 22

Back to the shoegazing dreamy pop. Nice ebow at the beginning and ambience in the background. The drums dissolve in echo. This is like Ben Gibbard singing a Slowdive song. I really like this song, very sweet and innocent.

Track 23

Another beautiful ambient song, this is the closer. Again sounds like Stars of the Lid with a nice delay a la Windy and Carl. I love this kind of stuff.

And this is it, the mix ends. 23 tracks who I feel were carefully selected. I know this mix was not intended for me but I really fucking liked it. I absolutely love shoegazing and ambient/noise/post rock. Those parts of the mix were really my cup of tea. I'm not a huge fan of post punk besides joy division but the tracks were carefully selected and they had a nice flow. Thank you for this mix, it really feels that you thought it well. I appreciate it. I don't know who you are but you have great taste in music.

i made your mix. im always caught in between flow and variation with these mixes, with this mix i decided to mix it up a bit before mellowing out to close the mix, a bit of a compromise between both styles. from the posts ive seen from you, you seemed to enjoy a few pretty chill artists, so i figured settling into that flow to close the mix would work well. im glad that worked out, that you didnt recognize too many of the artists, and im really happy you liked the mix. i enjoyed reading all your comments. if you'd like any of these albums, let me know, and i will upload them.

1. Times New Viking - Call & Respond - Stay Awake (infectious as hell, as you probably know)
2. Child Bite - Broach For Two - Wild Feast
3. The Dead Science - The Dancing Destroyer - Villainare
4. Antn Hrkwk - Johnny Appleseed - Mutually Assured
5. The Wrens - Built In Girls - Seacacus
6. Oblivians - Bad Man - Popular Favorites
7. Eric's Trip - Run Away - Forever Again
8. The Hospitals - Getting Out of Bed - Hairdryer Peace (loved the comments for this song)
9. Black Tambourine - We Can't Be Friends - Complete Recordings
10. McLusky - Forget About Him I'm Mint - The Difference Between Me and You is That I'm Not on Fire
11. Starfucker - Rawnald Gregory Erikson the Second - Starfucker
12. Crystal Castles - Courtship Dating - Crystal Castles (a blast)
13. The Gutter Twins - I Was in Love With You - Saturnalia (mark lanegan and greg dulli sound great off each other)
14. Jon Brion - Dmi Thing From When She Was the Kitchen - Synecdoche, New York OST
15. Polmo Polpo - Requiem For a Fox - Like Hearts Swelling (this song is delicious)
16. Lotus Plaza - Bragging Party - Unreleased
17. Sparklehorse - Saint Mary - Good Morning Spider
18. Little Joy - With Strangers - Little Joy
19. Circulatory System - How Long? - Circulatory System
20. Thee Oh Sees - What the Driven Drive - Sucks Blood (i saw that you were curious about thee oh sees, so i threw em in. my fav song by them, i think i used it in my first mix)
21. The French Kicks - Sunday Night is Fair - One Time Bells
22. Shortwave Set - Figures of '62 - The Debt Collection

Cheers, The flow of the mix was orientated from my taste and stuff I've been listening to recently. I go by the method that the best mix I can make is music I know well regardless of taste, doesn't really interest me to make a mix revolved around someone elses preference. Anyway, glad you liked it. My favourite so far.

Thee Oh Sees, really? I only have a single from them(which one of the songs happen to be on my mix too) and this so sounds so different. Happy to see that from them. Also, I've had that Hospitals album downloaded a while ago but totally forgot all about it.

And that Eric's Trip song..I have their first album and everything they've done before that, but for some reason never checked out their other albums. I'm glad that there's a lot more out there from a band I'm already into.

But thanks for the good mix and checking out to see what I was into already. I was surprised by a lot of these bands. I've heard of most of them but just wouldn't ever bother listening some reason. Definitely want to hear more of Shortwave Set, Starfucker and Little Joy (sorta reminded me of the Gene Pitney song "Town without Pity" if you know it).

Working on my review. I dunno what to say, it's not really working for me. I will still do a track by track review, but it's just not keeping my interest.

This mix threw me for a loop- it’s pretty coherent though...
1. A sort of uptempo clubby beginning. Reminds me of the Kinky Wizards… oh—my favorite part of the song? The sample from Pee-Wee’s playhouse. Pretty cool.
2. The tempo is dialed up a few notches on this one with driving drums and processed vocals. Teasing some cure-esque guitar work toward the end there. I’m ok with this, but was ok with moving on, too.
3. This sounds very retro. Very short and punky. Ok.
4. Ok this is all sounding retro. Like the music they would play on High Fidelity (see #1) the mix is nice and coherent so far… the song ends and comes back in with something else… weird.
5. Another short little ditty. I like the transitional quality of these shorts.
6. OK this sounds all so retro that I am feeling self-conscious a little for not knowing who any of these people are. Hey I like this one. Very catchy.
7. Another catchy love song with driving drums and organ sounding guitar.
8. You know I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me this was just one artist.
9. Ok a cover of Beck’s Gamma Ray. Is this all just one group?
10. A slower tempo. I like this one better than the rest so far. It seems to have more of a plot.
11. This one is pretty cool. Very melodic female vocals, but that same lo-fi production value prevalent in the songs here.
12. More muddy production. The vocals sound nice although they are not comprehensible. Still no idea who this might be.
13. Distortion on 11, wailing vocals over an organ progression and whirring static. I could use this on a score for something weird…. Interesting sounds though.
14. This could be a mix of the Strokes and Arcade Fire in some respects. I like the tone here.
15. More psychadelic organ, vocals and muddy effects going on.

This is a pretty out of the ordinary type of mix for me. – that’s what I like about it. I can tell I would have to subject myself to repeated listenings to understand it and really get into it, which means I would be stretched, so I just might. Thanks so much for this mix!

Yeah I tried to find what you were into by your posts, but I didn't find much in the music forum. Figured this would be a fun mix to listen to for anyone. The original mix I was making was getting a little too weird for just anyone to dig.
I too thought you'd probably find the bands similar, but I was picturing something I'd like to hear on an actual mix tape. If I had all the LPs and 7"s I probably would.

1. Sonic Youth - Master-Dik (Beatbox Version)
2. Wavves - So Bored
3. Nodzzz - I Don't Wanna (Smoke Marijuana)
4. Thee Oh Sees - Bloody Water
5. Christmas Island - Doin' Swell
6. Nobunny - I Am a Girlfriend
7. Japanther - Bumpin Rap Tapes
8. No Age - Teen Creeps
9. Jay Reatard - Gamma Ray
10. Women - Black Rice
11. Vivian Girls - Where Do You Run To
12. Crystal Stilts - Crippled Croon
13. Eat Skull - Seeing Things
14. Time New Viking - Call and Respond
15. Wooden Shjips - Death is Not Your Friend

(mixxx.zip)

Anyway, I'm glad it was something new for you that wasn't too boring. Might be most enjoyable once the weather gets warmer.
