In the Machina documentary Billy said:

"When we started rehearsing it became obvious that right away that the chemistry
with Melissa was immediate. It didn't sound like a different animal. It still sounded
pretty much like the same animal...and Melissa's style seems to integrate very well."

Fast forward to 2012 >>>

Billy Corgan:
"I play guitar pretty much on top, and so the bass is better laconic. If the bass is too on top, like for example, Melissa Auf der Maur. When she played with us, she played very on top, and it was constantly tripping all over the fucking guitars. It’s hard to get… the Pumpkins’ sound. If you can bottle it, it’s sort of predicated on the idea the guitars are clearly on top and ahead of the drums; the drums sit in the middle, and the bass is a little back, so it has an impact and wide-scope sound. That’s the sound that I like to hear. Maybe it was developed through playing with D’Arcy and the way she played. I got used to that feeling, and so I’ve looked for that feeling ever since."

Yeah, seems like Billy still harbors resentment that Melissa didn't go along with the idea of renting out the Metro in December of 2000 and fleshing out a whole new record.

Where's that Graceful Swans one

The Full Circle doc expresses perfectly what SP should have been remembered as.

I've never read that before. I liked Melissa even over D'arcy. I felt like she contributed new energy which was really needed at the time. I liked their chemistry on stage too.

That's odd because that's pretty much what Nicole is doing now?

Agreed. This was the most stunning revelation for me reading those FB posts he wrote about the last Metro show. He clearly seemed to think he was handing Melissa the keys to being a bigger part of Pumpkins history (ironic considering the band was breaking up) and it was clear she clearly saw herself as a stopgap to play with the band until the end of the tour.

Billy talked about it when he discussed the "final" SP show's anniversary on his Facebook in 2010. Apparently, Billy was so happy with the band's chemistry (even though he and James were at an all time low personally) that he wanted to rent the Metro out for the month of January so the band could rehearse new songs, then play 7 to 10 shows that were recorded live and became the final release from Smashing Pumpkins. So, the December 2nd show would have been the last show in the sense that it was the last time Smashing Pumpkins would play the old songs, but these series of shows in January 2001 would have been the real "last word."

This started some minor discussion on if these songs would have been songs Billy eventually took to Zwan, if they were some songs he'd been working on during the Machina tour, or if they would have been created spontaneously (like the residency songs from 2007). Was "Untitled" potentially a part of these songs?

Here is what Billy said specifically regarding it...

Quote:
rst thing that comes to mind is that we only had about 6 days to prepare the about 14 or so extra songs that we added to try to make the show both historic and memorable. normally this much work in such a short time would have been met with resistance, but everyone was in good spirits to have the 11 months of touring finally over. my original plan was to book the metro out for the whole month of January and make one last album, writing songs and recording them live in rehearsal and then playing them at night at the 'shows'...can't remember how many shows we would have done per week? maybe 3 or 4. Iha+ Auf Der Maur hated the idea and said no.... a shame, could have been amazing. band was tight at that point and i was motivated to write more. we had the 2nd to last show at The United Center, and we wanted to film that as well. unfortunately the building wanted to charge us (i could be wrong but...) 50,000$ just for the 'right' to film, not counting the actual costs it would have been to film. so there is no video that i know of. if there is it might be... a lone camera. that show was amazing, although we were criticized for opening the show acoustic. we had been opening with 5 songs acoustic in Europe as a way to set a different tone because each night the audience was thinking they were seeing the band for the last time. there the audiences went with the somber beginning, and so i stupidly assumed that an American audience would go the same way with it. Wrong...!

Why did Auf Der Maur say no to such an amazing opportunity?
Has anybody ever asked her why she "hated the idea"?

As far as I know, Melissa has never said anything about it. A few years ago, someone on the oboard went to one of her shows and talked to her after the show. He said that besides publicly putting herself in the running in 2006 when the band was revived, she has had no interaction with any of the Smashing Pumpkins. The fan said she claimed that as far as she knew, she was still tight with Billy, Jimmy, and even James Iha, but had not spoken to any of them in a number of years. In another interview around the time her last album came out, she claimed she worked with Billy on a song that ended up being cut from the album, but at the time (I think she said late 2004/early 2005) he was still toying around with the idea of getting the whole band back together.

My guess as to why she said "no" would be that she was exhausted mentally and emotionally from having to learn over 50 songs, and take part in what was essentially a year straight of touring. Also, there was the fact that she did not probably want to continue being in a band that consisted of two grown men in a pissing match and a drug addict.
