He wouldn't move out of the guy's way. It was 5pm and cars lined up behind us in both directions, about 10 or 11 deep. Which is a lot in a small city like Wellington. People got out of their cars to see what was going on and there's my Dad, sitting there in his Toyota Platz that he bought off my brother when my brother upgraded, cheapest fucking ugliest car in the city, with his wife, daughter and two grandsons, refusing to move, like the fucking North Going Zax, saying over and over "No, I won't move. You're supposed to give way to traffic coming uphill. Everybody knows that. You back up!".

Half the people are backing him up, all outraged... "Yeah! You back up!"

And the other half were like "But, you do have about four feet here sir, if you would just pull over a little and let him pass, we can all get moving again."

Since then....I have been trying to just...let go, of more stuff. It just isn't worth it.
Ah, pride v. logic. Classic.

Like, obviously you're making a point but you're holding everyone else up in the process. I would've just moved over and raged quietly on the ride home. Don't be a hero.

My Dad is 72 and my Mum just turned 67 so who knows.

I'm 38, and I realised that I have never seen him do anything like that before. He normally rages quietly and rolls his eyes. It seems like it's a feature of his ageing process, like, he's been easygoing (in public) for the last 72 years and now he's just given up.

It made me realise that I have at least another 34 years of not being publicly thorny, before I can just give up and do what I want.

What is that age that old people reach when they decide when they back out of their driveway, theyre not looking anymore. You know how they do that? They just go: Well, Im old... and Im coming back. I survived. Lets see if you can.

Do you drive much?

I didn't drive until my oldest was 5. It was good practice for living here, at least...

Took my kids for a tour at an international school today. We've been homeschooling for nearly a year, and I have actually loved many parts of it, but they are starting to get pretty lonely.

The sad thing is that they only have space for my older kid, at the moment. So he'll go for one term, starting next month, and then my younger one won't be able to start until August.

It sucks that it's that way round, because the oldest is probably the happier of the two, to be staying at home.

I'm kind of worried too, that if they start at this school they won't want to leave, and it will just be yet another transition for them.

I have made a gigantic mess out of all of our lives in the last year or so. It kinda sucks, for everyone.

I drive a lot, yeah. Almost daily. But this test is asking crap like how many inches from the curb can you be and how many feet do you need to have your turn signal on, etc. So I have to study to recall the precise numbers.

Would it just be better to wait until the school has enough room for both kids so resentment doesn't build? I guess homeschooling is A LOT to handle. I have a religious friend with 7 kids who is your age. She just had her 7th about a month ago and her oldest is probably about 16 and she homeschools the whole family. She's a huge believer that the siblings should be best friends, etc so this was her way of insuring that. They're sweet but kind of out of touch. At least she hasn't banned computer use so they do have a vague idea about the world.

Went to a big churrasco party yesterday that was really fun. Got really drunk and had deep anxiety conversation with a friend's girlfriend who I always thought disliked me since we barely exchanged a few words in the past.
It's always nice to have those small surprises and suddenly to really relate deeply to someone you thought you had nothing in common.
