At one point in time peter hook played the twelfth fret on his bass and sting also plays on this fret so really sting is the biggest influence on the national.

Actually not often at all when it comes to sting. All the time when it comes to Hook.

I KNOW ITS A JOKE BUT ITS NOT FACTUAL.

Anyway, little known fact, David Gilmour played bass on The Police's records. Like Sting can play fretless, come on, get real.

The true post punk pioneers are obviously The Beatles anyway.

In terms of post-punk pioneers, The Velvet Underground, man

It kinda pisses me off that people ask the Bearles vs. Stones thing when clearly it should be Beatles Vs. VU

Rolling Stones were never In the same leauge as The Beatles imo

they should definitely be in the converstation, especially since pink flag was a pretty much straight up punk record before they started the transition. i only posed the question because it seems like from whatever i read and hear, it's always 'joy division created post-punk' and i never really considered that the case. 154 and unknown pleasures are probably my two favourite albums, so its not like i'm pulling for one or the other. i just don't know both sides to the history.

velvet underground->mc5/the stooges->pre-ramones cbgb bands (television/patti smith)->punk->post-punk. the question was about pioneers of post-punk.

i'm going to coin my own version of godwin's law: Mooney's Law "as a completely unrelated music conversation continues, the least knowledgeable person will show themselves by being the first to make a beatles vs. rolling stones reference."

yeah it's a hard call on wire v. joy division, but it is interesting to hear the progression from pink flag to 154

The longer a discussion about The Rolling Stones goes on for, the more likely The Beatles will be mentioned.

I feel like stuff like Venus and Furs and All Tomorrow's Parties are pretty much Post-Punk. They were just super ahead of their time.

I mean so many post-punk groups list VU as a defining influence and a lot of them really sound like it

there's a reason the english language has two different words for influence and pioneer.

Well I meant the second half of it, my bad

They're influential because they were pioneers. I mean, those simple beats, hammering repetition, distorted guitars, literary and sometimes gothic lyrics, the noise freak outs, the blond women, Reed's wearing of black and sunglasses

Seriously. Am I wrong to say VU was a post-punk band before there was even punk?

How can something be post-punk before the "punk genre" even took place?

Well post-punk refers to a sound and style right?

It doesn't just refer to being after punk.
