one of the few astute things b0lly ever said was pointing out (in the 90s) that rock is really a young man's game, and older people for whatever reason are bad at making rock music generally. Singer songwriters, I can think of a fair number who put out good stuff later in their careers. Blues guys don't even get warmed up until they get old according to several iconic bluesmen.

Just heard of this guy. Pretty sure he is not over 40 but he's a good songwriter. Kind of like a more alternative Neil Young played by someone whose voice is half Ian Curtis and half Jeff Buckley.

I think having a fanbase to appease massively contributes to bands and songwriters stagnating.

I look back at music I was making 10 years ago and honestly I think it's a bit shit and there's no way I would want to make that kind of stuff now. I don't have any sort of fanbase or label so I can do whatever, keep learning, keep having fun doing it. I've done all sorts. If I had to stick to alt rock or whatever I'd have given up years ago.

Corgan really was done with guitar rock after MCIS but let himself get trapped doing it so he's gone shit and never been able to develop his synth stuff or whatever it is he actually wants to do (if he even knows any more).

Some guys get trapped into doing it because it's their "job". Listen to Jerry Only era Misfits stuff, it has no business existing. It's getting made to keep the Misfits merchandising machine going.
