privilege for me has come from family, if anything, not my looks. my grandfather invested $500 in my name the day i was born which i haven't touched which is now worth 8000% of that.

i'm a licensed electrician, and in two months will also be an electrical engineering technologist. if it takes me awhile to find suitable work as the latter, i will be working for ~$30/hour as an electrician in the meantime. i think i'm doing well enough to put off dying for a few years.

i'm quite content with myself at my current weight of 155lbs. i've been as heavy as 195lbs and was extremely self-conscious about that. i've been able to maintain my weight now for a couple of years and i'm very happy about that. i'd lost a ton of weight twice before but gained it back.

we rarely use metric for weight and height. in school we are taught metric, but in the trades imperial is mostly still used.

a carton of milk is 2 litres, and we measure large distances in kilometers, but if something is ten feet away, its ten feet away - not three meters.

500 bucks to 40 grand? You sure about that math?

i am now that you confirmed it for me. it's amazing what can happen over twenty-seven years with dividends automatically buying more stock coupled with compounding interest.

I mean even if interest rates for the last 40 years on a CD were an impossibly high 10% every single year, you wouldn't have that much on 500 bucks. And in the utterly impossible event that they were, 40 grand will barely afford an entry-level luxury sedan.

lol nice edit. Also that 40 grand isn't liquid, is it? Is that a 40k portfolio of assets?

i can only get a price as far back as 1995, but then then shares were worth $5. so lets say my grandfather bought 100 shares for $500 bucks. since purchased, the stocks have split twice - so 100 shares turned into 200, then into 400. dividends paid by these shares went into purchasing new shares, which bump total shares up over 600. value of these shares, even though they've split twice, halving each time halving the value while double total shares, has gone from $5 to $60. Over 600 shares at over $60 each. this leaves simple math. interest doesn't really factor into it at all, i suppose.

Right, because it's not in liquid assets. Also capital gains tax. Your initial post was intentionally misleading to make it seem like you had actual cash on-hand. Instead you have a portfolio that is not worth as much as you think.

i haven't paid taxes on any of the capital gains. i'm in the process of getting these tax sheltered and will have to pay taxes as if it were income to do so. but then there would be no further tax moving forward.

this is not my portfolio. this is an interesting story about $500 my grandfather invested for me. i perhaps may have intentionally or not not mentioned that i haven't paid tax on it yet.

the company is Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) listed on the TSX. my grandfather invested $500 twenty-seven years ago. whether that seems far-fetched or not doesn't really concern me.

nah, as you stated, at this point i can barely afford an entry level luxury sedan. i'll wait for it to go up another 8000% in the next twenty-seven years and then retire on my $3,000,000 yacht.
