also i recently was reminded of Blue Skies Bring Tears "Version 1" which is so much better than the other 2 that actually ended up on M1 & 2 (main album) imo, if i put together my own custom M that would without a doubt be the BSBT i in clu ded |

Hello fellow o-boarders
https://image.ibb.co/hfLLUw/SP_TFAEOMM.png Smashing Pumpkins | The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music (Released 29 Feb 2000) 1. Slow Dawn 2. Lucky 13 3. Real Love 4. Vanity 5. Stand Inside Your Love 6. I Of The Mourning 7. Try 8. Dross 9. Let Me Give The World To You 10. -Intermission- 11. This Time 12. The Imploding Voice 13. Glass & The Ghost Children 14. Wound 15. Go 16. With Every Light 17. Home 18. Age Of Innocence Runtime: 76 mins Singles: 1.Stand Inside Your Love 2. Let Me Give The World To You Radio singles: Lucky 13 / Real Love This is the tracklist I’ve landed on after 18 years. It comprises of the tracks I still listen to in a running order which flows pretty damn well. One of the issues with Machina era tracks is that the best songs are all 4-minute mid-tempo near-ballads, which poses a problem when curating an album, because the result could easily fall flat. The original Machina flowed pretty well, with G&TGC as an anchor point - yet the song choice doesn’t hold up, especially when we were later given much stronger tracks which were left on the cutting room floor. The main issue is the big rock/metal numbers to signal Jimmy’s return are all pretty tiresome, and have aged badly. Glass’ Theme over stays it’s welcome in two minutes, like ITIAG, one run-through of verse and chorus is enough. Meanwhile Cash Car Star, presumably an intended single for Machina 2 is a total misfire. It may have worked great live, but it’s all bluster and I can’t get through it now. The two most enduring rock songs of that era are Lucky 13 and Dross. L13 could’ve been a White Stripes song, and has a hook and attitude about it which made it one of the most accessible and memorable M2 outtakes. Dross just has a classic grunge vibe to it. The ‘Intermission’ is intended to be a 50-sec excerpt from the piano version of If There Is A God, or Le Deux Machina or… take your pick. Crying Tree Of Mercury and Sacred & Profane both held up pretty well, but I couldn’t justify their place in the track listing. The album is still a few minutes longer than Machina, but as it’s a fan mix, who cares. If I were to shorten it to 16 tracks, I would remove Go and Dross. I’m fairly confident doing away with the Machina mystery and prioritising the best songs would’ve led to greater accessibility and commercial success. i'm all for doing away with the Machina mystery but I'd still probably end up making it a double-album

For the OP who put "Go" in his track list. If you think James Iha wrote that song with the Machina concept in mind you are deluded. I would not even be surprised if James did not hear about that whole mess until after the album came out.

I do want to prune it down to a double album when I can be assed, but I figured the best way to approach it would be to start by slinging it into one huge pile and see what could be chopped off later. Go would be one of the first ones off for roughly the reason you mentioned - it may not even be part of the overall plot, it just works well enough if tossed in there. I'd probably also ax Saturnine, Lucky 13, and maybe Crying Tree as I don't think they add enough on their own, and/or Age Of Innosence considering it was tacked on at the last minute. I've probably Stockholm syndromed myself to hell and back with the Machina tracks. I hated MI when it came out but I've listened to it all so much over the years I have few problems with anything anymore barring those terrible fucking Soul Power and Rock On covers. |

I've been absolutely obsessed with MACHINA since it came out. Once we got MII I started making my own album configurations and have made many dozens over the proceeding years. MACHINA might be my favorite era. It really tapped into all those feelings floating around at the time (see death of rock). Oddly enough, it's really evocative of the guitar sound that would rise up in the years after. One thing I've noticed over the years is how diverse the fan base is on this. Most fan made track orders really through me off. Both in order and which songs to omit.

they're not terrible. there's worse. they've got their charm. I see their place.
I wouldn't even consider rock on as a machina song and a cover... well it's a cover, so not like he "wrote it" for that era anyways. |

You guys need this thing in your lives if you've not got it. That version of BSBT was a revelation to me when I first heard it, too.

i've heard that all the way through at least once, but i often forget it exists since it's never really included with M2 or anything, and M2 being subtitled with the same name is kind of a throw-off too
