not sure if anyone still around does a lot of photo editing. I'm a total amateur but I have been kind of learning photoshop by myself. I can get pretty rad colors by switching to lab color and messing with the curves and then bringing up the vibrance if need be. I can also usually get a picture to satisfactory contrast by messing with the histogram.
sharpening though is giving me a headache. I have done some research online and there doesn't seem to be any conclusive opinion on which photoshop sharpening feature is the best to use. In the past I have usually used unsharp mask, but then I read that the best way to sharpen is actually by using the high pass filter. This seems to give me better results than unsharp mask only sometimes. THEN I read that ACTUALLY the best feature to use is smart sharpen because it is the newest and most advanced of the photoshop sharpeners. Smart sharpen seems to ward of graininess the best, but it also does the worst job drawing contrasts between colors IMO, so it's like a wash. The thing is though that these features all have a lot of options, and the learning curve seems to be fairly steep in figuring out exactly what each option in any single feature does, let alone learning to compare all the options different features have. So is one of these features objectively going to give me sharper looking images without incurring graininess than the other features if I learn to use it really well? I'm just not sure how to come to a conclusion about which is best with a billion options on each one |
