I'm somebody now, Harry. Everybody likes me. Soon, millions of people will see me and they'll all like me. I'll tell them about you, and your father, how good he was to us. Remember? It's a reason to get up in the morning. It's a reason to lose weight, to fit in the red dress. It's a reason to smile. It makes tomorrow all right. What have I got Harry, hm? Why should I even make the bed, or wash the dishes? I do them, but why should I? I'm alone. Your father's gone, you're gone. I got no one to care for. What have I got, Harry? I'm lonely. I'm old. Now when I get the sun, I smile.

i generally just use that part of the quote: "It's a shite state of affairs to be in, {insert name of the person you're with here], and all the fresh air in the world won't make any fucking difference!"

Pretty much anything from Rosemary's baby. Don't know why,i just love this movie so much i can pretty much quote it through.

"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig." - Blondie, The Good The bad and The Ugly

“If the Holy Bible was printed as an Ace Double, it would be cut down to two 20,000-word halves with the Old Testament retitled as ‘Master of Chaos’ and the New Testament as ‘The Thing With Three Souls.’ ” - Philip K Dick

"These are my principles, if you don't like them, i have others" - Groucho Marx

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistance. Talent will not. There is nothing more common then unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world if full of educated derelicts. Persistence and Determination alone are Omnipotent.” - Joe Strummer

i transcribed this one once from a documentary on Alan Moore:

"Now this is the single most important thing that we can ever attain, the knowledge of our own self. And yet there are a frightening amount of people who seem to have the urge to not just ignore the self, but actually seem to have the urge to obliterate themselves. This is horrific, but you can almost understand the desire to simply wipe out that awareness because its too much of a responsibility to actually possess such a thing as a soul, such a precious thing. What if you break it? what if you lose it? Might it not be best to anesthetize it, to deaden it, to destroy it? to not have to live with the pain of struggling towards it and trying to keep it pure? I think that the way that people immerse themselves in alcohol, in drugs, in television in any of the addiction that our culture throws up can be seen as a deliberate attempt to destroy any connection between themselves and the responsibility of accepting and owning a higher self and then having to maintain it." -Alan Moore

And that's a long excerpt of the book but i always remembered that part specifically because it's written in 1953 and only so much more fitting now

"Man has always been a venal animal. The growth of populations, the huge costs of war, the incessant pressure of confiscatory taxation – all these things make him more and more venal. The average man is tired and scared, and a tired, scared man can’t afford ideals. He has to buy food for his family. In our time we have seen a shocking decline in both public and private morals. You can’t expect quality from people whose lives are a subjection to a lack of quality. You can’t have quality with mass production. You don’t want it because it lasts too long. So you substitute styling, which is a commercial swindle intended to produce artificial obsolescence. Mass production couldn’t sell its goods next year unless it made what is sold this year look unfashionable a year from now. We have the whitest kitchens and the most shining bathrooms in the world. But in the lovely white kitchen the average [person] can’t produce a meal fit to eat, and the lovely shining bathroom is mostly a receptacle for deodorants, laxatives, sleeping pills, and the products of that confidence racket called the cosmetic industry. We make the finest packages in the world, Mr Marlowe. The stuff inside is mostly junk." - Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye

I've not read that but i have all of his books and i believe also, short stories (never checked for sure). He's also one of my favorite.

There's two kinds of people in this world, people who love Raymond Chandler, and people who love Dashiel Hammett.

(actually Hammet's ok but i just don't think he had the wit of Chandler...what is it... there's another chandler quote i like about how what a writer should invest all their time in is getting is a style. or that one where he says if he'd been any better, hollywood wouldn't have called, and if he'd been any worse, they wouldn't have either)

i've got everything he's done (minus a few books of letters). Do yourself a favor and pick up his 'notebooks'. extremely fascinating look into his process and how he collected information he would later detail in his books. he would re-write ad copy from home furnishings magazines, make lists of metaphors, lists of proposed titles, stuff like that.

you can get discount copies online all day for like 5 bucks or less. AMAZING book. there's no added prose. it's just transcripts from his personal workbooks/journals.

Sounds great. I'll look for it.

and here are the quotes i meant though i misquoted the second one in meaning

“The most durable thing in writing is style, and style is the most valuable investment a writer can make with his time."

“Had my books been any worse I would not have been invited to Hollywood and if they had been any better I would not have come.”

And while looking for those i found two more i really like:

"Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia"

and

"Most critical writing is drivel and half of it is dishonest. It is a short cut to oblivion, anyway. Thinking in terms of ideas destroys the power to think in terms of emotions and sensations."

Which is pretty much what i've always thought of cultural criticism in general (which is a sore point with my gf who was doing Cultural Studies and Critical theory when she was at Upenn...)

i'd already posted the last one.

the first though i didn't know and is gold too.

I dont care for the fall and only mildly so about nick cave but there needs to be more people like this who aren't afraid of telling it like it is

In the 80's Morrissey and Robert Smith did that a lot too. About each other even. It was even better cause both were very successful commercially. I hope if i'd ever have been a successful musician i'd have had the balls to diss my shitty peers too.
