I hated my gym teacher in seventh grade.

One time, she pulled me aside, telling me that I was supposed to have black shorts for my gym strip instead of my dark olive-green shorts, and that I would be docked marks each day I didn't have the correct shorts. "The school colors are red and black, not red and green." She told me to tell my mom to buy me black shorts.

My family has always struggled with money, and I felt guilty asking my parents for anything, so I didn't want to tell her that I needed black shorts.

I just kept on wearing my green shorts, and then one day the gym teacher tells me not to bother coming to class if I haven't got the correct shorts.

So the next gym class, I just head straight down to the office instead of to gym class.

The gym teacher eventually walks into the office, sees me, and goes off on me for being absent from class unexcused, telling me that for all she knew, I could have been missing or dead or some shit.

I still don't understand what the big deal with the goddamn shorts was. It's not like I was playing on a school sports team. In that case, it would make sense to wear the appropriate uniform to represent one's school to the audience and other team. This was just regular fucking gym class. We didn't wear uniforms in school, so why should gym class be an exception?

In ninth grade, we got a new gym teacher, and he didn't give a fuck what you wore as long as it was appropriate for physical activity. Any t-shirt and shorts or sweats or whatever would do, didn't have to wear the official school-logo shirt.

He also subtly threw shade at the last gym teacher when he started at our school.

"Who was your last gym teacher?"
"Mrs. Horton."
"You see, I try to treat the kids who are into athletics and the ones who aren't equally."

The older gym teacher did always go on about how "the point" of junior-high school is school sports, and if one isn't on a sports team, one is wasting one's middle-school years. Somehow, 14-year-old me never trying out for the basketball team is not amongst my gravest regrets. I could see how it would be for somebody who peaked in middle-school, though.

i never understood why we had to suffer through those pictures. like, even if you've never seen a penis, i can guarantee you would know to avoid one like that. and it doesn't stop 99.99% of people from eventually having sex. so WHY?! just to have a terrible image burned into our brains?
