13th Step has texture and dimensions, feels like a real, live band playing. Mer De Noms feels like session players stepping in to help a buddy (Billy H) make his dream come true. I like it a lot, but 13th Step is far superior.

I like the new tracks fine. Kind of sounds like where they were trying to go with eMotive but fumbled in the execution.

Pretty sure Iha is just a hired gun though, pretty sure Howerdel writes all the music on his own.

But yeah band has not aged well. Can't imagine the response to new tool will be much different.

The live version of that smokes the studio, for sure.

Meh. I don't hear it. Most of eMotive sounds flat and lifeless to me. I've tried, I really did.

i haven't heard the full album, just that one cover
it's pretty breathtaking, the one live version i heard sounded kind of half-assed, at least vocally

The best cover they did didn't even get a studio recording. It was a mashup of the verses of Ozzy Osbourne's "Diary Of A Madman" and the chorus of The Cure's "Lovesong" and it slapped.

Ah yes, that is a beautiful cover. They put it on some official live comp a few years back, and it sounds great, but it's preceded by like 6 or 7 minutes of banter between the band. You get to hear Iha tell a really cringe-worthy joke, but I'm usually inclined to skip it when it comes up.

APC lost me at 13th step. .Tool lost me at 10,000 days.

When I saw the later in Seoul Maynard spent most of the time between songs flashing ironic devil's horns and striking fake rock star poses. he was mocking the korean heavy metal fans, who totally missed what he was doing. it was pretty lame. you take the money for opening for metallica and then to compensate mock the fans who paid you? Sheesh kebab!

Their best song was Imagine. They should write more like that one.

MJK and Tool especially have always been pretty openly hostile to their fans, starting all the way back with calling their band Tool and making their logo a penis cause they found it amusing to see kids walking around with shirts that said Tool and had a penis on them thinking it was cool.
