what billy has been missing for 10 years is clean guitar
Half of the smashing pumpkins sound used to be the clean guitar sound. It was like there was this clean electric and then there'd be fuzz.
Great songs like this: Tonight tonight (the riff) Galapogos Siva Rhinocerous Snail Obscured Starla Whir Drown Hummer Soma mayonaise Notice how a lot of those songs contrasted simple clean guitar with loud fuzz? That was pumpkins... Even the early stuff with effects, you could hear behind it the natural guitar. Then it just became effects. There is absolutely none of that sound in something like doomsday clock Ever since Adore, there have been no clean guitar parts. It was either run through an effect or acoustic. The last i heard of that sound was the bridge of tarantula and thats like 8 seconds. Before that it was Zwan... but he wasnt playing pumpkins music there... he was playing happy shit. Basically when i think of the core sound of SP. its two songs Clean - Luna Fuzz - Rocket like... not that those are the best songs. But rocket is like just complete fuzzy hum. and Luna is mostly that cleanish guitar sound Im having a hella hard time putting this into words... does anyone else get what im saying? I can play all the solos in Zeitgeist now accept for Bring the Light. Don't have the effect capabilities. I can play the Bury Me solo though The first song I learned from them was Hummer. But I've never heard of a single person beside Billy master the Hello Kitty Solo. Shit is fuckin insane. By far my favorite solo from him.

The Pumpkins sound is a lot more than 2 guitar tones. I suggest you make a CD of those two songs and listen to only that CD from now on. This way you can't be disappointed by the new Pumpkins material and you won't need to make worthless posts whining about how Billy is raping your childhood by taking new directions with the music - you know, like he has with EVERY PUMPKINS ALBUM! If you don't like the new material or Zwan, just ignore it and listen to your Siames Dream CD. |

Adore=clean guitar on For Martha, so ha. Plus, you're simplifying this too much. Just enjoy the music for fuckssake.
How's the "Pumpkin Chord" for the Pumpkin Sound? You know, the 5th and 3rd string octave chord? He uses it Zeitgeist a lot, so does that make it better? Geez, like Greedo said.... |

The 5th and 3rd string octave is considered ''The Pumpkin Chord''? Did I miss something?

I think the guy made a valid point. He is definitely guilty of simplifying things a little too much though. I agree with him. The loud and quiet dynamic are severely lacking in this latest outing. The seamless blend of cleanly whirring guitars, into the over the top fuzz could have added a lot of ''The Pumpkins'' disarming charm to Zeitgeist.

The "Pumpkin Chord" is specifically the 5th string 11th fret, 3rd string 13th fret, plus an open 6th string. It's also kind of a joke.

I think you are missing the point. The Pumpkins have never been just about ''loud fuzz'' Its always been about blending ''loud and quiet'' with ''warm fuzz'' That's is what has set them apart from other bands. They aren't just ''Clean guitar'' and they aren't just about ''heavy guitar fuzz''.

There's clean guitar on Tarantula during the bridge.
I think I get what you're saying, though. Overproduction in the studio has removed some of the organic quality the Pumpkins used to possess. |
