Malcolm Turnbull has defeated Tony Abbott 54-44 in a Liberal Party leadership ballot and will become the nation's 29th prime minister.

Julie Bishop beat Kevin Andrews 70-30 in the ballot for the Deputy Liberal leadership.

The nightmare is over. Kinda.

Yeah Turnbull is fucked and tbh in the long run this is probably bad news cause it means at least 4 more years of LNP but if Labor can't put together anything better than Shorten then the whole lot of me can go in the ocean as far as I'm concerned.

But it does feel great to know that flog got what was coming to him. This could well mean an opening for marriage equality too.

Same thing as Abbott. Maybe worse.

Currently the the boats are either intercepted and sent back into open water to sink or return to the country of origin, or else asylum seekers aboard the boat are sent to a detention centre in Nauru, that is rife with human rights abuses and run/staffed by a private company whose bottom line is profit.

I remember when refugees from Sarajevo were placed in a facility somewhere around Fremantle and complained of various hardships, including being harassed and beaten up by roaming gangs of kangaroos.

Anti-refugee types quite possibly made that last part up, but I'm pretty sure this was printed in The West Australian at the time.
