It’s fun
Rarely, it’s frustrating, but even then, it’s reliably a hoot Fun/hoots = positive, probably |

Definitely a positive. I wasn't here when it was at its alleged most toxic.
This place is the internet equivalent to that hole in the wall bar that has really great appetizers that no one goes to. |

Even though I have had more negative than positive experiences, overall the impact is still positive I think.
I definitely learned a lot about humans and many forms of abuse. |

That's hard for me to gauge, because it's been at least a marginal part of my life for a decade so I can't really guess what the last 10 years would have been without it completely.
Some people here have talked me out of (even more) stupid decisions, and have chatted with me during some difficult times. I was part of the last wave of fucked up bullshit around here though, so sometimes certain people added a bit of stress to my life. I had fun with it though. Some of the group chats (though that was really more of an Oboard thing) were a nice way for me to socialize during some low points in my social life. So I'm leaning positive, but I'm sure I would have been just fine without it. Neutral? Still coming back! |

if this was my first board ever it would have almost certainly been negative
fortunately i dealt with any & all "message board related trauama" in high school & was more than prepared for the fantastic levels of assholery around these parts... perhaps even been guilty of participating it at times, but don't tell Billy! it's had so many effects on my life that I can honestly easily say I wouldn't have been where I am right now without it.
i met nothing/everything on netphoria, with whom I went to lots of gigs and he showed me a certain record store in Amsterdam. if not for that store, or at least being there at that moment, I wouldn't have seen the ad that got me into my previous band, which which i played in the weirdest and coolest places all over Europe. I wouldn't have had the experiences I had and the contacts I made through that band. I wouldn't have played in my current bands whom I got into via my old one, one of which led me to meet my ex-gf, with whom I had a relationship with for 7 years and went to a.o. Northern America to meet some of you. |

i had to give this a moment's thought but quickly concluded that it has been a net positive.
on the negative side: i'm never really exposed to the same degree of negativity in real life that we've had here over the years. you've got to admit, negativity really is our thing here, especially historically. and at times it's been an outlet for me to be much more of a jerk than i'd ever be in real life and i indulged some shitty personality flaws here especially in my 20s. also goatse and lemonparty, what the hell guys. haha at the top of the list of positives would be the friendships. here i've met a lot of cool, interesting people. and i've been lucky to have people support me and talk through unpleasant times in life, who know what it's like to be fucking miserable and not judge you, etc. i've also learned a lot of things i'd not have learned otherwise, been exposed to books and movies and music i would not have known about otherwise, which have enriched my life. there's been some pretty great jokes here over the years and some delightful creativity at times. and many times when i've been lonely or depressed, it's been really helpful to have a place that's always been here to blow off a little steam, have someone to commiserate with, or f around. so yeah, definitely a positive and it's not even close |
