I do really like Trent Reznor as a person/artist in how he conducts himself and continues to work to please fans and act like a normal guy, so I really want to like his music.

Pretty Hate Machine is probably the wrong album to start with, unless you are sporting a skullet and it's 1991. It's not a very bombastic album. It does one thing and does it well, though.

After that I don't know how to rank the rest I'm obviously more of fan of the old school though, I still feel like I'm going to hell just for listening to Heresy though

I totally agree
Limp bizkit may have made a song called that but trent had that shit down pat way before

Since NIN is being discussed I have to ask:
Am I the only person who loves the original NIN version of Hurt but hates the Cash version.
No disrespect to Cash cause he was pretty awesome but I think he fucked that song up (look who produced it)

Reznor lyrics are super cringe now but they ruled when I was a teenager

I'm on Big Man With A Gun. This album is fairly good but I'm slightly bored.

Big man with a gun is not great. I will grant you that. But it works in the context of the album I think.

I actually think you might prefer the fragile rbg. Or something like the slip. I have an echoplex tattoo so that clearly hits me p well.

I will give The Fragile a shot. I definitely didn't hate Downward Spiral but I guess I was expecting a fairly meaty album, and I felt like there just isn't that much happening in a lot of the songs? Like they are kind of lean and sparse? The overall atmosphere is cool but I didn't find the production to be mind-blowing or anything. In fact, I would kind of say the sound is more "dated" than a lot of other alternative albums that came out around the same time. Could just be a matter of perspective because I'm an outsider to industrial music, but for instance people complain about the 90s electronic sounds on Adore but this is way more dated sounding.

NIN may be a band where I really enjoy individual songs but might not be able to really dig into the albums. I will definitely try the Fragile, and again I did enjoy Downward Spiral, but if it is considered to be about their 2nd or 3rd best album, I don't see much hope that I could get into the ones ranked lower than that.

I get that. I'm fairly sure i wouldn't get into them now if i hadn't heard them when i was 18. I still don't get pretty hate machine.

I mean this probably goes for a lot of artists that I still like. Np: white pony

if that's the case, you'll likely vibe on The Fragile much harder.

Downward Spiral & everything that came after still sound really fresh to me, tbh. But at the same time, I still don't think Adore sounds dated oustide of a couple of moments

ok so I am listening to the Fragile and.... I love it. Seriously.

This is SO different than Downward Spiral. It came out just a few years later but it could easily have been ten years later or more based on how much more developed the sound seems to me

I'm not sure exactly how to explain it but the songs here sound more dynamic and fleshed out and full. DS gave me more an impression of being overly concerned with "THE SOUND" of the songs versus the content of the songs. I also think the production on the Fragile is far more interesting and the tracks are more robust in terms of instrumentation and hooks

The Fragile is stunning. Probably my favorite album ever. It’s so weighty.

not gonna lie, some of it might have to do with The Fragile just being more rock-oriented as well
