"This Time" Lyrics, Song Meaning
I always thought this song was about the breakup of the band
but i thought it was mainly about D'arcy's recent drug troubles (at the time) and Jimmy's past troubles and just so much strain over the years that it had to come to an end. Then last night, i was listening to the song and remembering how Billy said that it was James that broke up the band and the 1st verse hit me "this time i need to know i really must be told if it's over it's up to you, you know the things you really want to hold are in pieces" Was it a situation where James said he didn't know if he wanted to continue in the band, but took some time to finalize his decision? "crashing down crashing down again crashing down crashing down my friends" The band, his friends..crashing down and coming to an end "i've got to move it on i've got to sing my song while i still can dispatch the last alarms hand out the last few charms there's no surprises" Billy isn't done making music, if the pumpkins are indeed over because James doesn't want to continue, then let Billy know because he wants to create more music "only love only love can win crashing down crashing down again" The only way the band stays together, is if James decides he loves being in the pumpkins too much to tell Billy that it's over "for every chemical you trade a piece of your soul with no return and who you think you know doesn't know you at all their drain is needless" This verse is about D'arcy and somewhat James D'arcy's drug problem and the disconnection between Billy, James and D'arcy and if the rumors of Billy being the one who played all the instruments on some of the albums, then "their drain is needless" meaning, he doesn't need them to continue. "someday we'll wave hello and wish we'd never waved goodbye to this romance we'll drink up every line and shoot up every word till it's no more" Billy thinks the band will get back together, altho now we know he was wrong because D'arcy and James both declined to be in the band. "so cry these tears we'll cry as all we've held so long to fall apart as the curtain falls we bid you all goodnight" Be sad, as a band...they held on SOOO long despite all the arguments and turmoil but now, it's finally reached it's and and its over "as the curtain falls, we bid you all goodnight" - meaning it was a great ride and a lot of fun...but goodbye, the pumpkins are no more. So yeah, a lot of Billy's songs are mished mashed with a lot of different ideas he's had in his head and he'll plop them into a song just because it fits this song, is one of the most straight forward songs he's ever written if not THE most straight forward and obvious what do you think? |

I think you nailed the meaning, Desolation_Disco_King. That was a very interesting read and I'm looking forward to your future insights about the pumpkin world (pumpkinland?)

This is an interesting explaination I heard somewhere (probably on here)
This verse has a specific message for each member of the band (original members) "for every chemical you trade a piece of your soul with no return (Darcy and her drug problem) and who you think you know doesn't know you at all their drain is needless" (Tension with James) "someday we'll wave hello and wish we'd never waved goodbye to this romance (A message to Jimmy saying we shall rock again) |

maybe the song was meant to be sung by all members as with farewell and goodnight and d'arcy figured out her lines and left the band. of course james was too busy thinking about his gay ass dildos to understand.

I get sad every time I hear this song.
Didn't Billy start to cry or choke playing this at the last Metro show? |

I heard that he did but am not sure. I love this song it made me so sad the first time I heard it. I immediately thought it was about the band coming to the end. Like Billy said no one loves the band like he does, so it was sad to hear him sing about its end. I think this is one of the few songs where there's no debate about the meaning. |

Isn't it pretty obvious that this song is about the breakup? I mean, I can't imagine someone missing that.
I love how Desolation_Disco_King presents it, though...it's like "Hey guys, i'm just throwing this CRAZY idea out there...but do ya think when Billy sings "crashing down" it might be about the band breaking up?!??!?!?!" Yeah, no shit. What's next? Your theories on how 1979 is about lost youth? Or how Today is about depression? Or maybe about how SIYL is about being in love! I CAN'T WAIT! |

i said the song is about JAMES breaking the band up not JUST the band breaking up if you knew how to read, which you clearly don't you'd see that i said i always knew the song was about the band breaking up but it was last night that i was thinking maybe it's more specific..and maybe it's about JAMES breaking up the band. go back to school, ok? |

word, well if this time is an anology of the band then so is Gossamer.
Gossamer is basically Billy re-embracing what he lost but with fear of losing it again. |
