Radiohead haven't done a major US tour since 2003. Pearl Jam have done 3 or 4...

Yeah, assuming the unconfirmed date is correct, it's during Lollapalooza.

Now maybe this doesn't necessarily correlate with the size of each band's fanbase in the states, but I don't see Radiohead filling the Verizon Center any better than Pearl Jam.

Well, they both sold out the Woodlands (17,000+ I think) here in Houston - a well known hotbed of fans of good music how big is the Verizon Center?

Btw, there was something on atease about how they were being really specific about the venues that they do/don't want to play, and these venues just don't *seem* right to me

What the fuck...Radiohead has the number 1 album in the United States right now. Pearl Jam hasn't sniffed number 1 since 1996. Radiohead is clearly more well known than Pearl Jam. That's an absurd statement.

Anecdotally, the rock station in Boston's "huge" giveaway is tickets to Radiohead in Barcelona. Not Pearl Jam. Radiohead.

I think the Verizon Center seats around 20,000 without the floor. Not sure.

You really have to realize that you're basing this off of the fact that you deal with college students 90% of the time. You are wrong when talking about general population. Play Alive and Jeremy for 100 people and I bet more people guess the band than if you play Karma Police and Creep

What the hell does this have to do with anything, Pearl Jam isn't even touring, and contests are set up through corporate deals with promoters...

This was pretty much my point. Radiohead do not have much recognition outside the alt rock circle. FUCKING EVERYONE in the world at least knows Pearl Jam as the band with the guy who mumbles the lyrics. I would even go so far as to say the at this moment The Smashing Pumpkins are more well known than Radiohead in the US.

And album sales don't really mean anything anymore.

Pearl Jam - > Pumpkins - > Radiohead, in terms of recognition

Yeah, that's probably true. People reacted like this when I said Radiohead weren't too widely recognized last time. It's like it hurts their feelings that Thom Yorke isn't a household name.

not really, its because its wrong

its not like a good deal of radiohead fans arent the same indie snobs that pride themselves on name dropping bands you've never heard of.

radiohead has the largest google footprint of the bands mentioned here.

you decide the relevance of that, however.

Radiohead is more popular NOW than Pearl Jam is NOW. I thought that's what we were talking about? Are we? I realize that Jeremy is more popular than Karma Police. Regardless, Radiohead has the number 1 album in the US, a position Pearl Jam hasn't seen in over a decade. I guarantee that Radiohead would sell more tickets than Pearl Jam. Absolutely guarantee it. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm in college, either.

I was referring to overall public recognition. Radiohead will never have it the way Pearl Jam is it in the states. Pearl Jam is still the kind of band where non-fans will go out and buy their newest album because they know the name and liked some song they heard on the radio. Radiohead, not so much.

yes, we are. redbreegull and nimrod are trying to debate something that is entirely irrelevant to the initial discussion.

people would recognize 1979 and Today before any Radiohead song, but that doesn't mean the Pumpkins will sell more concert tickets in 2008. jesus christ.
