Why might my friend be continually called a 'bombasso' or 'bombazo' at his work? He's kinda short and stout, bald with a beard... is a server at Olive Garden. I see 'bombazo' means explosion according to babelfish, but I can't think of a reason why that would make sense. Is there some sort of TV character or something he's being likened to? That's all I can come up with.

I think you have the wrong word. Its babozo or something like that (my spanish is terrible). Anyway, it basically means moron, stupid, idiot. Shit like that.
