I see my attempt at a joke has fallen flat.

I was referencing Hilary Putnam's "Twin Earth" thought experiment, which he uses to support a semantic-externalist theory of meaning.

Philosophy of language makes a distinction between the "intension" and "extension" of a word. The former referring to the meaning or the a concept, and the latter referring to the things in the real world that the word picks out (for example, the intension of the word “star” is “a sphere of plasma that radiates due to fusion,” while the extension of “star” is every star that exists, including the Sun, Proxima Centauri etc.). It has traditionally been thought that while the extension of a term partially depends on the state of the world, intensions are mental concepts that are “in the head.” What a person “means” when they use a word is the meaning they intend to convey, the mental concept in their head.

Putnam challenged this view, arguing that just like extensions, intensions are also determined in part by things in the real world that are independent of the speaker’s cognition. He uses the Twin Earth thought experiment to justify this:

Quote:

Putnam's original formulation of the experiment was this: We begin by supposing that elsewhere in the universe there is a planet exactly like Earth in virtually all respects, which we refer to as "Twin Earth". (We should also suppose that the relevant surroundings are exactly the same as for Earth; it revolves around a star that appears to be exactly like our sun, and so on). On Twin Earth, there is a Twin equivalent of every person and thing here on Earth. The one difference between the two planets is that there is no water on Twin Earth. In its place there is a liquid that is superficially identical, but is chemically different, being composed not of H2O, but rather of some more complicated formula which we abbreviate as "XYZ". The Twin Earthlings who refer to their language as "English" call XYZ "water". Finally, we set the date of our thought experiment to be several centuries ago, when the residents of Earth and Twin Earth would have no means of knowing that the liquids they called "water" were H2O and XYZ respectively. The experience of people on Earth with water and that of those on Twin Earth with XYZ would be identical.

Now the question arises: when an Earthling (or Oscar for simplicity's sake) and his twin on Twin Earth say 'water' do they mean the same thing? (The twin is also called 'Oscar' on his own planet, of course. Indeed, the inhabitants of that planet call their own planet 'Earth'. For convenience, we refer to this putative planet as 'Twin Earth', and extend this naming convention to the objects and people that inhabit it, in this case referring to Oscar's twin as Twin-Oscar.) Ex hypothesi, their brains are molecule-for-molecule identical. Yet, at least according to Putnam, when Oscar says 'water', the term refers to H2O, whereas when Twin Oscar says 'water' it refers to XYZ. The result of this is that the contents of a person's brain are not sufficient to determine the reference of terms they use, as one must also examine the causal history that led to this individual acquiring the term. (Oscar, for instance, learned the word 'water' in a world filled with H2O, whereas Twin Oscar learned 'water' in a world filled with XYZ.)

This is the essential thesis of semantic externalism. Putnam famously summarized this conclusion with the statement that "'meanings' just ain't in the head."

It does make G.E. Moore's papers a bit more difficult to get through.

Actually, it's a meme of an off-beat Twitter status a rapper made that got shared a lot.

The argument referenced is this guy's.

Yeah, my philosophy jokes suck. Here are better ones written by people who are not me.

Quote:
A boy was feeling very nervous about his first date, and so went to his father for advice.

"My son, there are three subjects that always work with women: food, family, and philosophy."

The boy picks up his date and they stare at each other for a long time. The boy's nervousness builds, but he then remembers his father's advice and asks the girl,

"Do you like potato pancakes?"

"No," comes the answer, and the silence returns like a suffocating blanket.

"Do you have a brother?"

"No."

After giving it some thought, the boy plays his last card: "If you had a brother, would he like potato pancakes?"
Quote:
Jean-Paul Sartre is sitting at a French cafe, revising his draft of Being and Nothingness. He says to the waitress, "I'd like a cup of coffee, please, with no cream." The waitress replies, "I'm sorry, monsieur, but we're out of cream. How about with no milk?"
This next one is one of my favourites:

Quote:
An angel came down for a meeting of the American Philosophical Association. Greeting the assembled philosophers, the angel offered to answer a single question for them. Immediately the philosophers set to arguing about what they should ask. So the angel said, "Alright, you figure out what you want to ask. I'll come back tomorrow." And he left the philosophers to deliberate.

Some of the philosophers favored asking conjunctive questions, but others argued persuasively that the angel probably wouldn't count this as a single question. One philosopher wanted to ask "What is the best question to ask?", in the hope that some day another angel might make a similar offer, at which point they could then ask the best question. But this suggestion was rejected by those who feared that no such opportunity would arise and did not want to waste their only question.

Finally, the philosophers agreed on the following question: "What is the ordered pair whose first member is the best question to ask, and whose second member is the answer to that question?" Satisfied with their decision, the philosophers awaited the angel's return the next day, whereupon they posed their question. And the angel replied: "It is the ordered pair whose first member is the question you just asked, and whose second member is the answer I am now giving." And then he disappeared.

Last semester in my 19th- and 20th-century philosophy class, the prof was talking about how he might just change the name of the course to "20th-century philosophy" because very few of the readings were from the 19th century (in fact, now that I think about it, I don't think any were).

I responded "you should change it to '19th- or 20th-century philosophy,' because then you only need teach at least one of those things for the course name to be correct."

He chuckled.
