I finally got around to doing this. I used an online tool called Moises to separate the vocals and the band, then used Cubase to balance the mix. I added a chorus effect and a few different reverbs to try and give the vocals a bit more presence, and EQed them a little.
They are pretty low in the mix - if I had each vocal track I could've done more with the backing vocals but as it is they were all taken out as one track. I could've also "thickened" the lead vocal without it making the backing vocals jump out too much. Here's the link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mD...I84a5sz5WZe2Ee Playing this and then the original straight after is pretty insane. He's mixed *with* the band here, instead of being on top of it. Last edited by eviltimeban : 05-18-2020 at 09:44 AM. |

I'm working on Marchin' On now. There's a way I can separate out it out to four stems so I'll see what I can do with it. I did a version of it like Doomsday which was fine but I'd like to see if I can do it better.

honestly, i don't really feel it helped the song much. nothing to do with how you mixed the vocal stem back in or whatever, just the way Bill sings is so low-wattage here I almost feel it has to be loud just so you can understand even half of what he's actually singing - not that you always need to actually understand the words coming out of an artist's mouth to enjoy the track (Cocteau Twins, anyone?) but it's not like Bill's singing during this era was exactly "textural" either

This is a much better mix and I need to listen to it on better speakers but as Joey points out, the verse lyrics are so lethargic they kind of disappear here, it goes to show it isn’t just a vocal mix but vocal delivery that is off.
However the chorus is much improved, really like what you did. Now please do this for the rest of ZG and every SP song put out since. |

this sort of practice isn't so much polishing a turd, as it is separating a turd's constituent parts, seasoning and recooking them, eating it, and then presenting the resulting turd

Awesome effort here. The reverb's just a bit overdone in parts but the overall sound is light years better, even on my crappy laptop speakers.
If you're up for a similar challenge, anything off Shiny would be a good candidate. Thanks for putting this out there! |

Eviltimeban - if you have the vocal track isolated, could you autotune Bill when he goes off on racecar noises and fails to hit the high notes, but also to just fuck with his voice completely.
We need a robot vox mix. It could honestly energize the song and I *know* Bill would really appreciate it. |
