Green Day came up in the Bay area punk scene and played all the shitty dives and did multiple shitty van tours. It's not like they became successful overnight. Gotta give them a bit of credit, they made a record (Dookie) that had catchy songs and got radio play. But then again not everyone is a close minded elitist who only listens to UK punk and post punk from 1976-1982.

you're assuming elephant bore cares about things like credentials or hard work. dude's screening questions are "is it within a 5-year radius of the first Ramones album" & "how much leather is involved?"

They're from the Gilman scene

all ages venue that banned alcohol, lots of mediocre bands, not a lot of clever people

the only reason however that Green Day is of note is that Dookie was a glossy major label alternative release

similarly you can look at say The Offspring and Smash

my biggest gripe however is just that the music is tedious and juvenile

I would say they "sold out" and they honestly did

but it's not as if they were any good as a punk band, becoming an arena rock act was the best thing for them, blast that teen pop

Yeah, wasn't all that into it to be honest. Smash is the only record of theirs that I really like.

I don’t like the Offspring when they try to play fast Bad Religion style. Only song I really liked by them was Gotta Get Away. Dudes voice can be grating as hell.

the first time i heard Gotta Get Away, i was riding in a car with several other people, only one of whom i knew, going up to a rage against the machine / wu tang clan concert in august 1997. it was pouring rain and a very close friend had died the day before, and i was a mess. the kids in the car were drumming along to the song intro on the seats and roof and stuff, and it was a brief reprieve where i felt like shit was ok for a little while. so i've got a soft spot for that song

is there any news about the machine reissue though? and is there consensus that bill using a completely different artist for the reissue is bad? cause that's how i feel

The 90s are over.

It's 2019, and the Billy Corgans and Donald Trumps run the world.

Is this hell?

Back to “no news”, huh?

It can’t seriously have been pushed back to a 2020 release after all the hyping Bill did over the last tour.

"Pope"-attitude at least here in his catholic "Knights of Malta" costume.

Billy told a few days ago on Instagram that he would write now NEW songs for the next SP-album. And he would need a quiet space for his songwriting.

Maybe time to do another trip to Sedona. With the kids and a nanny. Or two.

Little interview on the Telegraph of all places today they have a pay wall so copy/paste

Quote:
Hi Billy, how are you?

Busy. I’m busy.

Sure. You’ve got a solo album coming out soon, a new Smashing Pumpkins album, an old Smashing Pumpkins album, two small children. How do you find the time?

I do also have a wrestling company. I’m very much involved in wrestling and I find it quite frustrating that people only ever want to talk about my music. Don’t get me wrong, I am fully aware of the quality and influence of my music and I get why people are so passionate about it. I do. You have one of the, if not the, best and most celebrated musicians, songwriters, artists of all time….you’ve got the time of this massively influential and iconic frontman, you ask them about music. I get that. But there’s more to me than music.

You want to talk about wrestling?

Well let’s not get off track here. I’m here to talk about The Smashing Pumpkins.

Can you tell me about the Machina reissue? You’re going a lot further than the typical remaster, it’s coming out later this year?

I can’t give a date for it. The original release was an artistic and commercial endeavor, with the artist beholden to commercial interests. It had to be released on time, it had to be released on budget. Now I’m giving myself the time and budget to do it right, it could be this year, next year, the year after. It’s purely an artistic endeavor this time around.

You must have some idea though?

If it were just Machina, sure. I mean.. I want to get it finished, into stores as soon as possible so we can start making some money. But when you’re working on a solo record, a new band record, a successful wrestling company, you have a family, touring…it’s very hard to say it’s going to be out on the 4th of March 2020. It’s not the 4th of March 2020 (laughs), that’s a date I came up with right now. Completely random.

Let’s talk about the process, the vision.. It’s a very ambitious project and I’m sure the fans will be interested in hearing more about it.

Sure. The original Machina record was envisioned as a double album. It came out as a single album and it was very much a case of, you know, oh shit we’ve got to release this thing (laughs)..lets tidy up as much as we can. The songs on it weren’t necessarily the right songs for the record or the best songs, just what we could finish. There’s at least 2 songs on it that I hate, hated at the time but they were finished so they went on the record.

Can I ask which songs?

(laughs) no!

One song?

Every song on Machina is someones favorite song of all time. What we’re, you know, doing now is I’ve got the track listing done and we have the basic record done beginning to end. Some songs are finished, some are demos, and then there’s everything between. The process is going through each one and doing the necessary work. Jimmy’s recorded new drums tracks for some songs, I’ve recorded some new guitar tracks, a lot of vocal tracks.

Your voice and vocal style has changed over the years. Was it difficult to get the Machina style back?

It wouldn’t be, I can still sing like that but I don’t. I’m doing this record now, so I play guitar as I play guitar now. I sing as I sing now. Jeff, Jack, Mark weren’t in the band then but they are now so they’re on Machina.

Is it fair to say that it’s a reinterpretation rather than a remix or remaster?

No it’s not a reinterpretation. It’s the band, as it is now, finishing an unfinished record. You’re finishing some work from 20 years ago.. you don’t pretend to forget everything you’ve learned in the last 20 years or not use any technology that was invented in the last 20 years. I’m not interested in staying authentic or true (laughs) in that way.

Interviewer : Hi Billy I would like to ask you about the smashing pumpkins but first can you dip your bald head in oil and rub it all over my body

Billy : I am the best of all time at doing that ask anyone. I'm not gonna do it but i could if I wanted to any time and would win a lot of prizes for it

Interviewer : Wow. Board me now.

interesting bit of "flash fan fiction," but not quite the behemoth that was your first! (the one a couple of posts ago)
