That was my first reaction because I first heard the story backwards. It helps to read between the lines of what Trump, Tillerson and McMaster are saying.

First I learned that Russia claimed that an alleged chemical attack was actually an accidental release of chemicals because they bombed a chemical weapons plant in Syria.

Then I learned Trump was publically condemning these "attacks" from the Assad government but works with Russia letting them know what we're about to do.

The MSM had ginned up all day that this would basically be a 180 degree departure by Trump and a signal that he is now suddenly in favor of regime change.

This turned out to be nothing of the kind. Trump shrewdly engaged in a hugely symbolic and proportional attack on the airbase from which the Syrians launched their planes which allegedly dropped CW bombs.

what has been achieved by this "attack"?

1. Trump has scared the living daylight out of the China man while having him there in Florida, clearing away any objections they might have to dealing with NK properly.

2. McCain and his cronies have basically been told to STFU on the Russian hysteria, and the media will follow. He'll probably get a bit of Democrat support as part of the bargain. – Even to the point of getting his healthcare bill through.

3. Putin gets to implement full control over Syrian airspace blocking Turkish and Israeli AF any access. This is needed to re-establish pre-war Syrian border integrity.

4. Putin can land more troops in Syria to finish off Daesh faster than before. The US will help with this as Trump is truly as interested in finishing off Daesh as the Russians.

The gas attack was truly a FF. The opposition may have been tricked into conducting it by a clever US/Russian move. He only destroyed the weapons cache, not even the airfield which is still functional.


This perspective holds but only if there's no regime change in Syria and if this move is a one off military action. The Assad Royal air forces are reportedly still using the airfield at present and attacking the rebels, so, what's changed on the ground exactly outside of ramped up rhetoric?
