The subtext of every single thread on Netphoria, ever, is "what is the best The Smashing Pumpkins song"
If we settled that question, the board would implode so forcefully that the shockwave would ripple back through time and cause this place to have never existed at all My vote is Mayo |

Mayo is my personal fave
Best song by corgan though is probably, objectively speaking, widow wake my mind No other artist could have achieved such a thoroughly offensive aural atrocity. It’s Pure Art |

Not understanding all the love for Mayo. For me it's gotta be Soma or Geek USA

Identity is the best song by the Pumpkins. It's better than Mayonnaise or One and Two.

I'd probably consider 3 criteria of quality and timelessness:
1. Sound 2. Lyrics 3. If it can be listened to anytime, regardless of one's mood Songs like Soma, Ruby, Porcelina and For Martha are certainly top-tier, but I don't know if they meet the 3rd criteria. I feel like I have to be in kind of a down mood to want to listen to them. For me, then, that leaves the following 3: -Mayonaise -Geek USA -Disarm And Disarm only barely meets the 3rd criteria for me. It's a sad song, but for whatever reason, it's just so good, I can listen to it anytime, anywhere. Geek USA has always been the song I've thought was the band's best ever. The riff is incredible, the dynamic changes are hyper creative, and that ending slow-jam "She really loves to break" part is the perfect exclamation point. But if I were to choose which song is universally the best, meaning, it transcends even what I think, I'd have to say Mayonaise. It's got the classic, defining Pumpkins creamy fuzz sound, great emotional vocals, lyrics that anyone can relate to and identify with, a simple yet perfectly structured solo, and I also love that Billy and James wrote it together. So my vote: Mayonaise. |

Yeah I still exist, sort of. There will never be a consensus on this and i wasn’t serious about identify (though I do think it’s one of his best) but yeah ruby soma porcelina mayo always get mentioned. My friend put on mcis the other day and the ones that got to me the most were jellybelly, hinw, 33, and ruby. I like medellia and marquis a lot. Obscured, Glynis... I couldn’t pick one. Rocket was the first one I really loved and that made me want to buy their album... blah blah
