Default SP1 live backing vocals

I've constantly found them grating, but accepted them as necessary evil.

I always enjoyed James' backing vocals in Bury Me. They add a dreamy effeminate quality that elevates the song.

I think this is a great topic for a thread, by the way. It's something that's interesting, that a lot of people have thought about and have an opinion on, but hasn't been beaten to death already. Good job bunny.

I don't think I've ever not liked them. Or noticed enough to be bothered by them

james' backing vocals were always good.. I especially like the ones on siva

as far as d'arcy goes, she's a good singer but I think she often had to sing out of her range.. and by that, I mean way too low. her low singing voice doesn't sound that nice, but unfortunately, that range (around G3-G4) is billy's most comfortable range.. so often it's not a matter of choice.
I like the backing vocals she does on luna when played live..
also she sounds very nice in live versions of rhinoceros

I always find them out of place, a compromise billy had to make to keep band mates happy early on - "I also want to sing too".

This is a particular offender because james just yells along with no focused pitch.
and when he does try to sing in pitch ("oohing" and "ahhing"), he's never really on the note.

I don't know what you're talking about.. in almost all live versions of the song - during the chorus, billy's pitch is somewhere around E3 while james is singing the same melody, just an octave higher.. although often times, especially in the SD tour, billy sang the same pitch as james

These backing vocals are awkward. They're not as bad as I remembered them though.

PS : Over the top crowd...

The best backup vocals are arguably on the live-takes of Adore in the new deluxe edition.

was it the drugs?

it's like billy gave her really bad unmelodic harmonies to sing.

yeah, d'arcy's backing vocals became atrocious during the adore tour..
and she started to do the awkward word-mouthing sometime in 1996.. I seriously don't get it, like, was she trying to piss billy off or what?

also, this is one of my favorite recordings in terms of lead/backing vocals: http://www.archive.org/details/tsp19...a.promo.flac24
you can hear everybody clearly, both james and d'arcy are spot on and sound great, and billy sounds as good as ever.

When james, d'arcy and billy sang together, it was so awesome. 3 very unique voices, it was ear candy.

i feel like i've posted this a thousand times but here it goes again: she's harmonizing the vowel sounds like a traditional background singer would (think: doo-wop) but she's also matching billy's vocals. it's like meeting in the middle. james "sings" background vocals". d'arcy harmonizes, but instead of a traditional "oooooh-la-la-la" (since was brought up in the other thread re: cheap trick she's kind of matching billy's words.

i think it sounds great.
