Default Songs that use the octave finger pattern

This guitar fingering shape was probably billy's biggest contribution to guitar/songwriting. It's a nifty little trick and I don't see any other guitarists use it as much as billy does.
The beatles were known for using the major and the minor chord in the same song (think creep by radiohead). I have the idea that Nirvana deserves credit for using/abusing the 5 chord, where the major/minor status of a chord is truly undefined and the melody forces it's status to change at any moment. From a songwriting state that is pretty clever. I think billy tried to take it one reductive step further by making it simply an octave chord... but with a drone note the effect becomes something completely different.
kudos to you billy.

here's a short list of songs that make heavy use of this technique:

Rhinoceros
Tristessa
Cherub Rock
Hummer
Geek U.S.A.
Silverfuck
Zero
1979
X.Y.U.

How do you know Jazz musicians in the 30s and 40s didn't listen to that MEGALOTHONAL riff in porcelina thanks to a time machine?

Porcelina, here is no why, chorus of tales of a scorched earth has some, etc.

Yeah Wes Montgomery was ripping off billy big time.

As far as defining chords, depends on song, but he’s more defining tonality of a mode, like cherub rock it’s a riff on e mixolydian, silverfuck d mixolydian, etc.

He also uses it a lot in guitar leads, there’s moments in geek USA, soma. That shiz all over Siamese dream

Those are single notes. I’d call you an idiot but I think by now you know that.

E Mixolydian. D Mixolydian. Octaves. I have no idea what any of this means and it scares me.

Yeah this thread is amazing. How about octaves are ubiquitous with music, just like every other interval. Billy corgans Music is overloaded with perfect fifths. Did he contribute power chords or was it green day or the ramones? Also: Wes Montgomery’s octave game is miles beyond Billy’s. This thread sucks. Let’s talk about jimmy drumming, that’s impressive, not Billy’s half baked pseudosabbath/Hendrix riffage

Hendrix used it way more than just about anyone. There was actually controversy in Guitar World back in 93' when Billy called the E octave at the 11th fret the "pumpkin chord" and hoards of angry people wrote letters telling him off and Steve Lukather talked shit about Billy in one of the following issues. Lol
