the Battle for Net Neutrality
has anybody heard about this fucking bullshit?
this sounds like it has a reasonable chance of actually happening and it sounds like a massive impending catastrophe. of the many things that make people heinously ugly, greed's gotta be in the top 5. |

tldr - companies want to make everybody have to pay for stuff on the internet like with cable TV. meaning that freely streaming stuff or having limitless access to the internet might be over soon

One of my more liberal friends, surprisingly, is staunchly anti-net neutrality. His opinions:
"No one who supports net neutrality is a Braveheart-Style freedom lover. They typically are very pro government regulation, which is, y’know, what Mel Gibson fought against - monarchy. ISPs do care currently what you use your bandwidth for - that’s why Verizon got rid of (then reintroduced upon network upgrade) their unlimited plan. Too many people using their network for video and as their sole internet connection bogged down the service for everyone. Once again, here we find the tyranny of a few affecting the network quality of all. A pricing structure - if it were to happen - where the heavy users are charged more than the light users would solve congestion. Different apps, different resources - exactly. Now, ISPs COULD block competing websites. Hell, Amazon could take Netflix off the Amazon Fire 4K tomorrow. But they won’t. If you block what people want they’ll dump your service. There’s always another upstart. People will accept internet discomfort to get what they want. Besides, the government could then go in and regulate internet like a utility and open it all up. Net neutrality is more law. I don’t know many organizations that are in favor of more laws. The internet was fine before net neutrality. So here’s the crux of (the) argument - we can’t get what we want and ISPs can’t get what they want. People want super cheap internet regardless of infrastructure costs, and ISPs want to turn a profit and build out infrastructure. With a “one plan” idea an ISP could charge $100 a month. Net neutrality wouldn’t prevent it because they would be offering all services. But if we are actually charged for what we use, the heavy users will complain, even though that’s how pretty much everything has been regulated since I can remember. (Remember when long distance cost minutes? Or you had regional cell phone plans? Now we have unlimited calling and unlimited text plus internet - and it’s cheaper than those old plans. And there was no communications neutrality!) ...You talk about how we can’t have the one outcome we want, so if we end Net Neutrality we won’t get the outcome we want. Which we can’t because, it seems, you’d consider it to be infinitely expensive in time and money. I don’t see how net neutrality makes the internet less or more free based on these arguments. Again, I pay LESS now for unlimited data and calling and text on my cell bill than I did a year ago, and cell phones are regulated. People pay less for home phone now and those are telecoms that are regulated. Also, the internet exploded as the single greatest invention ever without net neutrality. History would suggest keeping it wide open would allow for more innovation. Does that mean every innovation will be good? No. But that’s the market. It will correct itself. I trust the market more with my internet - not companies and not government. If we had a choice of ISPs...instead of government issued monopolies dependent upon geographical region...this wouldn’t be an issue. The history doesn’t add up with the fear. I for one am completely, unapologetically unafraid of net neutrality ending." |

The tl;dr version is, government regulation of the web is bad and results in regional monopolies, removing net neutrality will allow ISPs a better opportunity to charge customers specifically for how much data customers actually use, which is EXACTLY how it should be, and the "but getting rid of Net neutrality is bad because it will allow ISPs to do XYZ" argument that the majority of Net Neutrality supporters rally around would in fact be bad business for ISPs and is an argument based on fear, not reality.

Even in the U.S., telecom companies have restricted access to services that rivaled their subsidiaries.

I'm assuming so, yes. And I'm assuming he thinks that's a good thing because, again, you're charged for what you use and it's not one-size-fits-all like it is with N.N.

Don't people already pay different rates for different download/streaming speeds?
It seems to me that the issue isn't people paying different rates for different overall quality, but different rates for access to different things. People who use more data can already pay more to switch to high-speed internet, if a slower speed doesn't meet their downloading and streaming needs. But that's different from ISPs being able to say, "we're going to make services such as X and Y slower for you unless you upgrade." |

Fuck... Gotta say, I'm disappointed in the Trump administration over this.
Hard to see how this is anything but a loss for him as so much of his base gather in the online communities. |

You'd think with all the Trump hate out there that this was really a key thing he could have spoke out against and opposed and he would have looked like a hero to his supporters.
But fuck, I can see this leading to a total downward spiral as far as the internet is concerned. Could you imagine if someday the internet is more like cable TV? A lot of experts have predicted for a long time that that's how it might go. |

so the question of what will it take for fuzzy to actually see how evil Trump is has been answered. basically just do something that actually affects his personal life and suddenly he sees the light. oh muslim ban nbd, build a border wall, send back refugees to warzones, rape the environment and slash consumer protections, let big corporations ran rampant? not that bad.
open the door to someone censoring fuzzyroes' internet and charging him money for porntube sites? wow so disappoint in great leader |
