Songs about your town!
OK, this is actually a somewhat valid post.
I finally got ahold of the ONLY song that will ever be written about my town, Pullman WA.....some local white dude rapper named tyrant. it's fucking hilarious! www.wsu.edu/~swinn/tyrant.mp3

ummm in Try, Try, Try alt. version Billy sings "In Houston, on a downer buzz"...and Beck says "heading back to Houston, to get me some pants" in one of his songs off Midnite Vutlures (or is it Odelay?). But I don't know of any about the city specifically. what a shame.

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders, Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail. All along the southbound odyssey The train pulls out at Kankakee Rolls along past houses, farms and fields. Passin' trains that have no names, Freight yards full of old black men And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles. CHORUS: Good morning America how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. Dealin' cards with the old men in the club car.* Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score. Won't you pass the paper bag that holds the bottle Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor. And the sons of pullman porters And the sons of engineers Ride their father's magic carpets made of steam.* Mothers with their babes asleep, Are rockin' to the gentle beat And the rhythm of the rails is all they dream.* CHORUS Nighttime on The City of New Orleans, Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee. Half way home, we'll be there by morning Through the Mississippi darkness Rolling down to the sea. And all the towns and people seem To fade into a bad dream And the steel rails still ain't heard the news. The conductor sings his song again, The passengers will please refrain This train's got the disappearing railroad blues. Good night, America, how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. |

last year i went to a david usher/finger eleven concert and the opener was a mount pearl band called "trimmed naval beef." they were a rap/funk act, not terribly good. but they had songs about lots of stuff only people from mount pearl would get, like cruising around town on the bus with the creepy old guy who hangs at the mall with jr. high kids (the infamous Donny Dunn). i've been trying to get mp3s of theirs since i saw them, with no luck.

Vic Chestnutt- "Bug" off of West of Rome
The song talks about the DAR school in Walhalla, South Carolina. I am from Walhalla. The chorus goes- "Walhalla's pinned to the edge of south caroline, where interstate travel free's a man from China. A hotel filled with Pakastanies and a front porched filled with greasy-greasy grannies." One of those greasy-greasy grannies is my aunt who used to clean rooms at the hotel. Funny shit. |

There are songs named "Chapel Hill" by Orbit and Sonic Youth. In addition, a lot of stuff by Chapel Hill bands, while not directly about the city, is about a lot of stuff that's happened here. Superchunk and Ben Folds write about this town all the time.
