[Conspiracy Theory] D'arcy is Billy's "great white buffalo"
She was the girl he always wanted but never had, and it drove him crazy. He resented James for hooking up with her, he felt crushed when she left to go do drugs or whatever, he subsequently broke up the band and then talked mad shit about her. It's a classic "fuck that girl she's a bitch" mentality that rejected guys can get. I mean, just look at him in these videos.
He obviously looks at her when he sings about the girl he's loved all along (and he was probably on mad E so he was probably feeling romantic) and this bit of awkwardness along with this |

I wonder if he told her to wear those shirts on the Adore tour.
The story about when they first met sounds kinda like bickering/fighting feelings or whatever. I wonder if that's why he kept her around if she was such a terrible bassist. And he's always much nicer to her than the other original members, and protective of her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaibYQsp4Hw&t=3m32s |

She was a good bassist. Her bass lines are still a signature of SP's sound. She also was cool as fuck.
And she had no problem telling bill that he was full of shit. |

Yeah fuck people who say D'arcy wasn't a good bassist. She held her own for 11 years, despite whether she wrote all the basslines or not. I mean. She managed to improv Silverfuck just fine on the Mellon Collie tour.

That last interview in the original post may be the most lucid and coherent I ever heard D'arcy.

She meant more to the band than just playing bass, Billy still talks about her highly and quotes her.

billy needed a girl to join the band - d'arcy was a girl.
I think that's the extent of the depth. billy isn't that complicated of a guy sometimes. |

If anything, I'd say that Corgan subconsciously desired a sister figure, or consciously desired a "cosmic sister" figure, which explains why he always has female bass players.

It might seem strange today but back in the mid 90s D'arcy was one of the coolest women in Rock n Roll.
When it came to SP she had a good sense of style and she knew what direction to take their music. Her influence on the band had less to do with her instrument and more to do with her input on how they arranged songs, how the songs sounded, etc. Even if billy recorded many of the bass tracks in the studio, it was D'arcy on all the demos and giving input into all the arrangments. she wasn't a great technical player (like Nicole) but she did a great job on the low end with Jimmy, Matt and Kenny. There aren't a lot of women who can say they were able to stand on stage and hold their own with all three of those drummers. |

I've always thought part of why Zeitgeist was so bad is because Billy didn't have any string players to get feedback from.

A man so profoundly influenced by his "feminine side" probably couldn't deal with all that testosterone tainting his personal artistic expressions.
No, really. Remember how he used to talk about how influential that was on his music back in SP1 days? (Now it seems as though his "feminine side" is not a topic of conversation that he cares to visit. Hmm.) |

It is weird to read that Billy "was looking for a girl" or whatever. Billy was a nobody and had no bassist (probably no friends too), he just happened to meet D'arcy, there was no great search for a girl. She just clicked musically with him and James. Smashing pumpkins originally was a new wave / goth sorta band. Which is why adore sounds the way it does— that was the album they were going to make without jimmy. If Jimmy wasn't so good, they would have replaced him because he was the odd man out.
It is really weird to see corgan more positive about a former band member than the "fans". D'arcy was very involved in the direction of the band and the way the bass is played and sounds is thanks to d'arcy. There are many interviews in 2012 where Billy states this over and over. Also, Billy got Melissa into Hole, if he thought D'arcy was crap, he could have replaced her easily with Melissa. It wasn't that D'arcy was just a girl, she was an important member of the band. |

we have to thank D'arcys crappy musicianship for preventing the band from becoming excessively prog-rock and complex (a-la rush)
