Default Is it too early in the decade for a best Generation Y band thread?

Who do you think is the best Millenials / Generation Y band?

I'm going for either Tame Impala or Cold War Kids.

Crystal ball says thread turns into an argument about what birth year qualifies one as generation y / millenial.

That's why I didn't bother posting. That and no one would agree with Noisem, anyway.

I'm not sure how I would categorize this band, but for me My Morning Jacket has been the best since really breaking out around 2003 or so.

I feel like the obvious answers would be Arcade Fire, Radiohead

For rock music, it would probably be White Stripes, Strokes or Arcade Fire.

I don't know about Tame Impala or Cold War Kids, I guess people pa more attention to M83 and Vampire Weekend these days... I'm not one of them though

Tame Impala easily. Saw them live last June and it was amazing show. So good that I had to go and see them again when they came back around in October and they put on another great show. Should have seen them in 2012 too but passed that up regretfully. Every song pretty much was broken down and jammed out a bit, so good.

They have so much potential. Can't wait for their next album whenever that may be.

do you mean bands that have risen to popularity with generation Y (e.g. the National who are all in their 40s) or bands whose members are of generation Y? The youngest members of generation Y are now like 20, so I would say there is still plenty of time for people of this age group to have awesome bands. In terms of bands who are listened to by generation Y people, time is running out before these folks become old fogies who don't want to hear new music. In this case, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, White Stripes, the Shins (yeah I know they aren't popular anymore but are pretty influential in 2000s music), the National, Sigur Ros, Sun Kil Moon, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Interpol...

really this is just a list of bands I like who have been popular with people my age group in the last ten years or so.

how tame impala even come into this discussion is ridiculous.

fecal fumes > tame impala

nice sensible post redbreegul, each of those bands you listed could definitely be argued to have had great influence on the current generation

If you are talking in those terms then it's definitely Radiohead. Not even close. They are one of the greatest bands ever. 20+ years and not a bad album.

those are the date ranges of when members of generation Y were born. Generationalism describes people, not literal brackets of time

so music made by members of generation Y started roughly in the late 90s. Generation Z are all still ~15 and younger so they haven't really made any music yet.

when my dad was a kid his father asked him what his favorite song was and he said, "All My Loving," and his father said, "I mean a real song."
