As much as I hate Dawkins, he's right. He coined the term "meme" and subsequently gave rise to the "study" of "memetics" in one of his books way back in the 70s. The original use of the terms were obviously not in relation to internet memes as we know them now, but he definitely invented the word.

Fuck even a perfunctory google search would back that up, do your friggin homework Elph. This is why people give you crap man, because you talk about things you haven't done your homework on.

No pretty sure he just went to the bank with it and a lot of people now think he originally coined it in Selfish Gene but I would have to look it up to figure out where it came from

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/meme

Quote:
1976; < Greek mīmeîsthai ‘to imitate, copy’; coined by R. Dawkins, British biologist
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/de...n/english/meme

Quote:
1970s: from Greek mimēma 'that which is imitated', on the pattern of gene.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/meme

Quote:
alteration of mimeme, from mim- (as in mimesis) + -eme
First Known Use: 1976
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=meme

Quote:
1976, introduced by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in "The Selfish Gene," coined by him from Greek sources, such as mimeisthai "to imitate" (see mime), and intended to echo gene.

don't get me wrong, if I could rob Dawkins of any sort of credit he gets from anyone for anything, I would gladly do so because he's a fucking repugnant worm of an excuse for an intellectual. But that right there is pretty fucking comprehensive, eh?

fuck you, elph!
even after it was pointed out you were wrong, you were still "pretty sure, but i'd have to look it up".
what kind of attitude is that? how about looking it up in the first place, before posting? or at least looking it up after someone pointed it out that you were wrong, instead of replying that you were pretty sure? jesus. F. go back to the grocery store.

Haha

I didn't really want to argue about it

There was an article written about how Dawkins took the word from this other guy and used it in his book but I can't find it now.

I remember in grade 8 having to go to the library to take out books for school projects... This would have been just before I got the internet... Oh how times change.

this is the last thing Freddie Mercury sang before he died. He couldn't finish the song so Brian May sang the last verse. Laugh all you want but it's fucking haunting and beautiful.
